Burning Hunk

Since we are putting in our second stove (Englander 30NC) before this winter, decided to also get further ahead on my wood. I cut two standing dead on my property - a red oak and a white oak that netted me about a cord. We'll see what this works out to be, but I'm guessing around 6-7 cords. Thus far I've found some white pine, silver maple, birch, and black locust - looks to be a good variety. Lots of work ahead, but I absolutely love it.

Wow thats a variety of wood! You have species for shoulder seasons and for winter. I agree the work is part of the fun. Were any of the top limbs of the oaks dry enough for this season? Nice and neat stacks as well. Add a pic once you have it all c,s,s.

Unfortunately not, as this was from a land clearing job that my tree guy had just done on Friday. I'm just going to stash this stuff away for 16/17 and 17/18.

That is a lot of wood. Looks like your piles are close to the road. Have you had any problem with theft?

I do see a BEWARE sign there. I'm guessing those to Ridgebacks he has keeps people away from the pile. Or at least sounds the alarm.

Looks closer to 4 cords to me.
But I hope it is 8 !!

I filled a 10 wheel dump truck that size last January before the snow came and only got a little over two cords out of it.
Maybe three. Nothing big, it's mostly soft maple that grew on the edge of a cranberry bog and had to go.

Hoping to get another load or two this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Yes, the two Ridgebacks do a good job of guarding the wood piles. They roam the property with a wireless fence so we have the Beware sign up to deter people from wandering on the property. We haven't had any problems with theft - funny that Eagleknight mentioned it as the wife worries about the same thing. However most people around here are wood burners themselves, so wood is plentiful and therefore it's not so attractive.

Right, the dangerous ones are at the top. Best to stay 10' away from all power lines, and further the higher the kV

He was more worried about not knocking over my stacks than he was the phone/power lines. The way he parked he was able to lift a load up, lower it beside his truck, and then safely swing it over underneath the telephone lines. He wanted to load the wood in the spot he did so there was no chance of a log rolling into the road, which was the wise choice.

Shows you how much I know about utilities.
I'm a heavy equipment operator, and I run jobs when we are busy so that's stuff I need to know. Don't want to get an excavator boom too close if you're digging around wires
