So they don't use a contraflow design? Thought contraflow was a necessary aspect of masonry heaters.

You're right there doesn't appear to be any channels - so this is a wood stove with a lot of soapstone around it.

The smaller ones don't. I have a Tulikivi (model 750 I think) that I salvaged from a demolition. It has a soapstone firebox surrounded by a soapstone jacket (not installed as yet). A friend has one that's similar and it's great! At smaller sizes the contraflow channels don't make sense but the effect is the same. Not whole house heaters though.
