Metro, I like your hearth extension. Is that store bought or home made? That would be just the ticket for my situation. After 4 years of burning, the carpet in front of the stove area is getting a bit "crunchy".

I said the same thing last night to my wife as we were comfortable in this Arctic blast..."this is why I bust my ass doing firewood so we can enjoy this and save some oil".

I was thinking the same yesterday about all the sweat during the summer doesn't seem so bad now. We're expecting the coldest weather in 20-30 years. Other than a shrinking wood pile I could care less.

Stick his butt outside for a half hour with the phone and tell him " this is the way it's going to be if the fire goes out. Let it happen again you'll be out here for longer".

This is a heck of a year for my first year of burning. I'm still working out how to distribute the heat around our old 4-square farmhouse. Even still, its better than the propane bill.

Yep the oilman was here today and put the hose into the spout and was done filling in less than a minute.
Not sure how much he pumped in that time but not much.

Our 13 year old was doing the same thing today when I got home from work. One word for that "Sorry" ...Some people would starve to death if you locked them in a grocery store....

When my oldest son got to be about 15 years old, it started to sink in! He said "I see what you are doing, with the firewood and the chickens......"

By the way, he is a Boy Scout, working on his Eagle.

One of my kids broke handle trying to put wood in old buck we had. Threatened them with bodily harm if they touched new insert.

It's been in the single digits at night in our neck of the woods. Have been burning a little more wood than usual but the ol' wolf den is comfy cozy at around 70 all the time. Tee shirts, bare feet and sweat pants are the uniform of the day.

Am glad we processed plenty of wood ahead of time.

Wow that one round would heat my place for a month. Puts the biggest trees on my property to shame. That is if I had the saw and splitter to process it. Good job getting your kid involved.
