I would like some input on my idea to cutting a viewing window in the door. Im thinking somewhere along the lines of about 8 inches or so. I would do it right.

You don't be able to see through it after a fire or two anyway. Don't bother

You need to provide air wash over glass.
It would weaken the cast iron and crack.
You need to design your own steel plate door.
Search Honey Bear in this Forum using search feature at top right for pictures of air wash on doors. It should be bottom and top of glass.
