this past fall i purchased a homeade log splitter. someone spent serious time and effort building this thing and then for whatever reason it went un-used for some time. I paid $300. for it so i can't really loose too much,but what i need to know is if its design is worth the effort to get up and running again. I will post some pictures as soon as the snow is gone. At this point if i gave piston length,diameter,any pump #s. could someone give me some insight or is there a hydralic calculator for this type of stuff ?? it's currently powered by a mercedes 4cyl gas manual trans. overall length is probably 15FT wedge is 1ft tall. my plan is to use this to split the real big stuff into more managable chunks. I'm not opposed to signifigant mods as long as it's initial design is good . thanks

Well the snow has receded enough to attack this unit. first i need to make it roll again as r.wheel was frozen to the brake linings. like i said someone spent some time building this,but i know its going to need some updating. I think the priority is going to be the cylinder and i need to remove it. I believe it installed reverse of normal with the polished cylinder inside a sleeve (anyone seen this type before ???) I am removing it to inspect it if that's how it was made and if it looks good i will just re-assemble and run some redundant hydraulics to it to check for operation before attempting to re-power it as the Mercedes Eng. is quite ancient (any value Mercedes fans ?) From that point a multiple way wedge and log lift would be in order. Any suggestion would be appreciated and sizing of existing components could be checked for more info. thanks. by the way the name dick is welded into the push plate and i would assume that would be the builder and someone may have seen it in the past.

well i gotta take mine out AGAIN too.it's leaking where it's cracked in the back from not being done correctly the first time.

they say that runnin' "the handle" is the hardest part.....i see yours has a seat for the guy that run's "the handle" ;-)
and it looks like,when it's runnin' right it will split anything a guy can roll up on it.....you'll be needin' a tractor im sure. good luck with your new toy! she's a good'un.

fired up the splitter last week. I ended up running redundant lines directly to piston from backhoe just to see if it was alright and ended up wacking out about 1.5 cords of fresh maple. its pretty awesome 
ordered new control valve and am awaiting my 3 cyl perkins diesel complete used unit in a toro golf course reel mower w/all its hydralics, also and hoping to use them for log lift?? Anyone try useing a crane/boom with a winch on it and mount it to a splitter ??? I'd like to see some of your designs if they are out there.
