That is very cool! Is that something they are working on putting into future stoves? I don't remember seeing a slanted roof on any of the ones on their website.

I know it's early and this stove has not been beta tested yet, but so far it sounds awesome !

It looks great Dennis, thanks for sharing, I love a flame show, any idea how big the viewing area is? That's the thing with my VC, I have 280 sq inches of an unbelievable fire show...

Looks like a lot of extra parts just complicating the design to me.
Air foils, smoke flap, funnel outlet...really?
If you need all this, there is something wrong.
And slanted secondary just takes away from space more wood could occupy.
Sorry, not a contender on my list.

The secondary of the Progress Hybrid is slanted, as I have previously posted, very much like a Rumford fireplace. I believe that is why the PH throws so very much heat out of the window so very quickly as you start the stove. Takes no time at all with the PH to get the home warm from a cold start. Much faster than the Fireview. You can get plenty of firewood in the PH.

And, to add, I will bet you lose very little heat up the chimney with that new stove. The window appears to be huge, significantly bigger than the PH, and you surely get a tremendous amount of heat out the window of the PH. Bet that new stove will heat a home from cold start incredibly quickly. With the improved hybrid design, with direct air to the cat, and decreased draft, I also bet it heats for longer on the same amount of wood. You should be able to slow the burn down considerably from the PH, during the first few hours of the burn, which should result in lower stack temps and less heat lost up the flue. I find the improved design aspect of the new stove intriguing. Wish I had room for another stove! Be fun to try this one....

Can't wait to see it in action, we will have to see how many of these extra's make it to the production model. The air foil sounds good in theory but I would like to see it in person before I judge its value.

Beta Testing CUSTOM STOVE ART with the Kopp Family

The Woodstove Design Challenge has focused our attention on questions that we hadn’t really addressed before:

1. Can we make a really high performance woodstove that is completely affordable?
2. We don’t have the chutzpah to think we can produce a stove design that will make everyone happy. So, how do we make a flexible design that can harness our owners’ creativity?
3. How can we have fun with this product? How can our owners have fun too?

Part of the answer is that the Design Challenge Stove will offer custom design on the sides, the andirons, and the cooktop. You can choose from our design book (being developed), submit your own design as a graphic, or suggest a concept to us for review and execution.

Here’s an example of how we think this will work. Recently the Kopp family from Johnstown, PA sent a request for a design with a Fleur-de-Lis pattern on the stove. Here are a few of the images they sent to us.


We sent them the preview below, and asked them to send a couple of sentences explaining why this design was important to them. Here’s the preview that we sent to the Kopps:

The Kopps asked us to remove the stars on the hinges, make the fleurs on the andirons a little bigger, and change the colors on the stove. We are using our blog to publish the revised design for approval - and here it is...

Our plan is to credit each design to its originator, in this case Marie Kopp. We plan to retain designs and make them available to other stove buyers. Ideally, we will generate a design community on line. If the design contained a highly personal image (profile of a loved one, for example) we would not make it publicly available.

We are “beta-testing” the design/review process, as well as the mechanics of the stove. We are becoming quite adept with both the art programs and CNC programs we are using in this process, and we expect to be able create personalized stoves quickly and at very affordable costs.

We’ll show a number of designs from our employees over the next few days. We’re having fun doing this, and we hope our customers will, too. Many thanks to Brian, Sue and Marie Kopp for being our first test subjects!

The Fleur-de-Lis pattern stove is the one we requested. We're still deciding on the final colors for our Beta stove. We're going to stick with Metallic Blue for the body of the stove but we might change the doors and sides/legs to charcoal gray to get more contrast with the soapstone showing through the side designs.

Well, the idea came from my 19yo daughter. She loves French and has been a passenger over the years on my Honda Sport Touring and Pacific Coast bikes, but she probably doesn't qualify as a French biker

This is something that will be available on the new stove. As for the future of other stoves, Mr Morrissey is a great guy and comes up with some good ideas. He won't be resting for sure!

As for the slanted roof, etc., remember this stove is entered into some competition and I believe the competition folks are looking for ideas like this. So far from the reports I've received on the burning aspects of the stove has me a bit excited. This might turn out to be even better than I expected.

We understand your feelings on the Hog but please keep in mind this thing is entered in a contest and they were looking for things like this. In addition, the reports I've received so far sound even better than was expected so maybe these ideas will surprise many. I too am usually in the KISS crowd, but sometimes new things have their place.
