I noticed this weekend that when I put gas into my Stihl, the oil reservoir was still nearly full (I fill the oil when I run out of gas). Not surprisingly, the chain is also looking mighty dry. I've pulled the bar off and cleaned the ports where the oil comes out, but the oil still doesn't seem to be coming out.

Any suggestions other than a new oiler?

You could start the saw and rev it a bit with the bar, chain and clutch cover removed. That will allow you to see whether oil is being pumped out where it should. Did you clean up the bar holes and groove too?

I revved it with the bar and chain removed after cleaning out the holes that the oil comes from, but couldn't get any oil to appear. (I don't know how to take off the clutch cover.) Yes, the bar is clean as a whistle.

You took the plastic clutch cover off after the you removed the bar nuts. Look near the bar blots/studs for a hole - oil should come out when running.

I have on a poulan saw had it get like air in the system and taken a few mins to get the oil back flow I g but if you have uses a tank of gas thats not the answer. Even if bar hole or grove is trashed up you will still see oil leaking from the clutch cover...it just won't make it to the chain. And if you had the bar and chain off you did remove the clutch cover.

Oh buy a pro saw you won't have this problem:-p. Kidding Sorry I just had to do it.
 
It is also pretty easy for dirt of various sizes to fall into the oil reservoir when you take the cap off, if you're not careful about giving it a wipe before you remove it. That dirt would have nowhere else to go but into the oiler. Might be a possibility.
 
There is a filter on there but it still can suck up fine dirt.
 
From maple1 and clemsonfor's comments I just remembered that someone here had suggested I rinse out the oil reservoir with some gas when I had trouble with this before. I'll give that a try before I take it in for service (it worked last time!).

Also, clemsonfor... it's not that I don't WANT a pro saw! It's just hard to justify the expense at the moment. :-)
