My I-95 wood scrounge. ID help please.

Made my first I-95 firewood scrounge now that the snow melted. Me and about 7 other trucks on my way home today. Like minds I suppose. I could use a little help.

I think/hope ash and black birch??

I don't see the diamonds in the bark for ash, I'm thinking box elder or maple but I'm not very good at this!

1st pic is black birch 100%. That is some serious firewood after 2 years of seasoning. I know some say one however two years and it is just sublime. In the cold months a 50/50 mixture BB and Black locust produces amazing results. Enjoy!

Are you actually collecting the wood just off the highway? I often see lots of wood beside I-95 in my state, but the State Police would freak if I stopped for it. Sad because it just rots away.

If there was plenty of room to be off the road and safely collect I don't think they would give you a hard time. What's the worse thing that happens, they stop and ask you to move on?

True, but in my state I could see them writing a ticket for trespassing. It's kind of sad, but they are so worried about terrorism around here, the police control everything tightly.

I even have a three acre power substation near my office that has two police cars parked on the property just to protect it. And that's 24 hours/365 days a year.

Yup. Right off the highway. There is room to pull just about completely off the road. They are doing a ton of clearing. I was literally one of about 7 trucks in a row grabbing wood

If that is Black Birch your nose will tell you, it will have a very strong Wintergreen smell to it.

That's a GREAT scrounge though!!

You know what wintergreen smells like right? Like Spearmint...only alot better.
Take a pocket knife or razor blade and peel back a super thin layer of outer bark. Directly under that gun metal grey will be a bright green inner bark that weeps wintergreen oil. Easier to test on smaller rounds.
I think the 3rd pic looks like pignut but the super fuzzy fibers on the face of the round is making me doubt.

Black birch...my favorite wood to burn...split it well...it dries quick...where in CT on 95?

Black birch, ash and elm, in that order. Good firewood. The black birch will have a very distinctive wintergreen odor.

Pignut hickory won't be fuzzy like that elm. Another wood that has similar bark and could be found in CT is butternut, but judging from the whiteness of that piece, I'm guessing not. Butternut exhibits the fuzzy cut ends too.

I agree with jon E, nrford, and a few others who say Black Birch, Ash, then something else. I think the last one is Elm, but not sure.

Im going to say you have some cherry in there some of the heart wood looks to have a redish pink color in the first pic but hard to see. second pic is def ash. third is definitely hickory Diamond patterned layered bark.

I will split it tomorrow and know for sure on the black birch hopefully. I'll keep you guys posted. I would split now but it's snowing for some ungodly reason. The wood is all the way down near Rhode Island around exit 92 for those asking. But the newer piles are stacked tight 12 feet high and much harder to pick from.

Finally got to split it today. The sweet smell of wintergreen was refreshing. Black birch it is!

One more pic split this time of what many of you thought was pignut hickory. Still think so? Wasn't sure with the brown streak.

And finally...my cute little helper. In full safety gear of course. Minus the safety glasses...can't get them to stay on with the helmet and ear protection.

Honestly haven't seen black birch with smooth cherry like bark , but that's here not there.
