Well my wife is a craigslist surfer and she found free precut Black Locust about half an hour from my house cut in 2 to 3 ft lengths. So I feel great about that considering my brand new poulan pro 50cc i bought conked out halfway through felling a tree! Now I dont even need to use one because of her efforts to help me get 3 years ahead!

That's the same saw my brother is running, has had no problems. Cuts pretty good too.

If you haven't picked up that primo wood yet, it has to be gone. Pics or it probably didn't happen!

I will see if my cheapo phone will post the pics its not a smart one! But The poulan was 179 and i got the warranty throu TSC but the tensioner nut broke. I will eventually get another saw for primary use and switch to backup with the poulan. My whole family has the 18" and under poulans and i thought they were alright for the price but obviously there will always be a defect in mass production.

Oh and no offense taken i know you get what you pay for and unless you build it yourself dont trust it! :D
But the wood is on a casino lot he says there are several "cord" there which around her means there is probably 1 cord. But i will just be happy to burn some premo.

Joful- Thanks but i got a 16" poulan my dad left here a couple months ago for a 'just in case' scenario. But if that one conks out (its not well taken care of by my dad) I have a buck saw until my poulan is replaced/ returned.

Unless the plastic broke out the screw with the tab/pin is dirt cheap replacement wise.

Sounds like a good score, McNutt! After you spend some time on here, you'll find yourself owning a better saw and you'll be a pro at fixing them too!

Can't beat that price. ==c
We need pics of this alleged BL soon; We grow impatient. ;)

First investment will be in a smartphone. This is how i get internet through my phone so i can post pics (proof) of my crusades! But the saw would have been easy to fix but i paid $40 for a complete replacement plan so i might as well use it :)

Also why is 'popple' or quacking aspen so horrible of a wood? I mean i cut 5 cord of it last year because i didnt know any better and thats all i had access to at the time. I made it through winter with it. Now i cut at my mother-in-law's wih some sugar maple, cherry, apple, pine (white), basswood (i think) with an abundance of cedar and aspen.

It has a low BTU rating and be to sparking, i hear. One BTU scale i saw claimed it was "the worst of the worst" but gave no real reason. I thought willow was worst of the worst.

Up until last year I had never burned Poplar but didn't mind it so much. I was able to get my stove up to temperature but found that it left a lot of ash and didn't last as long as the lodgepole pine and larch I normally burn. I have a small lot and don't have the room to store low btu wood. If there are better options for higher btu wood I will always go for that option.

I own a 50cc and have no issues and it starts consistantly. Only thing it needed out of the box was a new chain, bar oil and fuel. Im on my 2nd new chain and she still rocking. Its like every product out there some people luv them some hate em.... #life

Jack's got it; Low BTUs. Sure you can get by on it, if you're at home to reload when you need to. I don't have backup heat so I need some high-BTU stuff on hand for when I have to be away for longer periods. My dogs won't be happy if the fire goes out and the house gets cold (neither will I if I come home to a cold house....the thick plaster-like walls are slow to heat back up.)
Sugar is real good, Apple even better, Cherry and Cedar OK (smell great :),) Basswood (Linden,) Aspen and White Pine are the weakest. White Pine I've heard is has a lot of pitch, but the dead Red Pine I've cut wasn't too bad in that regard.
Yeah, Willow is weak BTUs and smells bad. ;sick I think it's hard to split, as well. Never had any....
I was offered a bunch of Tulip Poplar, which is better than true Poplar but still pretty low on the scale. I might get some and split it up small for starter wood.

As others have said . . . low BTU and not a lot of coaling. It burns up pretty quickly. That said, no worries . . . use the "quacking" aspen ;) in the fall and spring when you only need a quick, fast fire to take the chill out of the air and don't need to have a really hot fire burning for hours. Heck, even in the winter you can probably still get by . . . just will have to reload more often . . . which may make the popple useful for the weekends when you are staying close to home.
