Found one! And, as if by an act of God, my tax refund showed up!

Appears to be in good condition... if i drive way the h&^% out to that end of the shore to buy it, what should I be checking?

Your speedometer. If it is the one in Delmar, don't get a speeding ticket.

It is.

I have already learned the hard way about going fast pulling a trailer... won't do THAT again.

But seriously, I've read bits and pieces here about boards being out of line, secondary tubes coming undone, etc. I just want to make sure I poke my nose in the right places before forking over the cash.

These stoves aren't known for many structural failures, but it never hurts to give it a good look over for cracked welds, cracked corners, etc.

Wouldn't hurt to take a metal square w/ you, and check the top and sides, etc, for straightness. From the pics the color looks pretty uniform, but in person I'd be looking for signs of over firing where paint looks whiter in places. If they are trying to hide that, you'll find darker paint elsewhere on the stove, perhaps some of it may wipe off on your hand if spray painted and not heated to cure, or you'll see signs of brush marks if brush painted.

Other than that, look at the baffle boards. They can withstand heat like and SOB but won't withstand one evening w/ a drunk who thinks he knows how to run a wood stove who happens to have a fireplace poker in his hands (long story).

I bought my 30 one year used. When I bought it, it had more creosote inside the box than most would ever hope to find in their chimney after a season of burning poor wood in a cold chimney. Guy had it stuffed in a single wide trailer and after spending a winter w/ the thing as low as they could make it run, and the windows in the unit cracked open, decided to sell it for something w/ a thermostat. My glass was terrible, the insides looked terrible, but it was only cosmetic, after the first appropriate fire the unit was back in business as it should have been from day one, heating large spaces.

Look for the reason why they are selling the stove and you'll get a good glimpse at how it was treated.

The stuff about baffle boards with a 30 is that the two boards together aren't wide enough to seal on the side. It would be that way if you bought one brand new. As to tubes all of the stories about them falling out I have seen is two about 13-NCs.

If there wasn't so much water in the way I would go over there and get the thing. Just sixty miles from me if I was a crow but 170 to drive it because of all that water.

People get upset when I say that....

"It's not far as the crow flies."

"But I'm not a crow. At best, I'm a Mitsubishi."

Yeah, it'll be a 2-hour trip. Coffee + cigar and I am happy.

Both stoves were external to this state. Roughy 6 hours round trip for each....

NC-30 Tubes can't fall out bolts ( stainless steel) hold them in place on sides. I guess the worst possible scenario would be if the baffle boards were damaged. All parts are available. Damn hard to over fire one of those, built like a Sherman tank. Check how the front door swings about the only wear point. Door gaskets are easy to replace.

On one side. The 13 tubes use the same retainers. The ones that had the problem had a tube that was too short. The other end fell out. As they would in a 30 if a tube was made too short. Very rate occurrence from observations here.

Make a trip out of it and go! I had to take a 10 hour trip for my insert but a good deal + gas was still cheaper than anything around me. Looks like a new coat of paint so I'd make sure they aren't trying to hide anything.

Edit: I may be wrong about the paint. A closer look, looks like there is still a sticker on the ash lip. That may well be a stove that wasn't used much.

There is still a sticker there. I'll take a straight-edge and check. They said they didn't use it much.

Mines been running 24/7 for the last 2 years, sticker still on ash lip

Better hurry up, a friend of mine is interested in that same stove, of course he is only 10 minutes away from it.

I already sent them a check... which would not prevent your friend from snaking it away... here's hoping he's a decent feller.

If I can get up with him I'll let him know it is already spoken for.

Werd.

Thats definitely not factory paint. Thats way to "Matte".

The "sticker" is just a little metal warning plate that can be covered with masking tape and painted around.

Everyone brought up valid things to look out for. But the paint isnt original. That looks like the BBQ paint Rustoleum makes.

Stove Bright isnt that dull. Maybe they spilled some water on the top and wanted to cover the rust?? Paint isnt that big of a deal anyways. Especially if you end up painting it a different color. I heard the 30 looks good in Brown!! ;-P

Good luck and Travel safe.
