Folks,

Picked up several pieces like this at the sawmill yesterday. The grain looks like oak, feels heavier than maple but the dark wavy pattern, I've never seen in oak before. Any ideas?

Looks like oak to me. All of the white oak family on my property have the dark heartwood esp the chestnut oaks. Looking at the bark it may be chestnut or post.

Looks like oak to me. If it was turned 1/4 and cut you would see the rays.

Oak of some sort. Does it smell like oak on a fresh cut? Oak has a very distinct smell.

Can you split that piece in half? I'd like to see that picture before I make a guess.

Oak has a very strong scent when green, and this appears to be pretty fresh.

Jealous that you can get oak slabwood. All of the mills around here only process softwoods.. although they give the slabwood away for free, so can't really complain.

Burr oak? Might be an Ohio thing but it sure looks like it to me. Once dry, throw it in and WATCH OUT because she'll burn hot.

Thanks everyone. :)

The logs were cut green the day before (and it rained all night) so it's certainly wet. I was thinking some sort of oak, have worked up a lot of red oak but not white. The grain sure looks like oak.

Doesn't have an oak aroma though. The mill owner came through while I was loading, said Fridays are when they do orders. Orders typically involve a lot of oak. This stuff was beneath the discharge conveyor, it's freshly cut.

He wasn't kidding... have never seen so much oak out there before. :)

Dat's oak of some flavor or another, or I'll eat my welding gloves.
