New heat pump for the season

Rather than waiting for our 20 yr. old heat pump to give out the ghost, I gave our old system to a friend in need and put in a modern, commercial, Mitsubishi hyperheat system. This is for a ducted system. It's a nice improvement. Most of the time it's so quiet that you don't know it's running. I added a whole house surge protector while at it. Currently the system is loafing with mild temperatures. I am curious how it does when old man winter blows in. We'll still keep burning, but it will have to get colder before we do.

Theoretically, the 3 ton system is rated to put out 40k BTUs at 17º. I will put it to the test when/if we drop into the low 20s to see how well it carries the load. The old 3T system was good down to about 30ºF.

I put in 3t Madia G3Evox (16k with Install) in April. So far this fall with Temps as low as 24f we are using about 9kw daily on heating. Four 5k Shop Heaters are using 40-50k daily. How it will do at -10f is to be seen. Very quiet outside and inside. Old unit dated from 2002 (Trane XP13i). Noisy to say the least. Could hear it with bathroom right behind the unit. New one have to open the Window and Strain my hearing.

What I dislike is you can't set the Furnace Fan to run 100% of the time in Winter. Designed not to blow cold air. Madia makes Carrier and others (Same exact Unit). We get some snow, up to 4ft at most on the ground. Old unit I had to keep clear of snow.

Thermostat has setting to run the fan 100%, but it does not take effect in heating mode. Carrier unit will override it I was told. Had them out for service call.

I put in Humidifier and Remy Halo LED. Dust is non existent. Also got 4 washable 4" Filters. About $300 but those throw away ones are 40 bucks each.

Also put in Surge Protector.

Not White Nasty Stuff is from years earlier. This fall zero snow. All Rain.

We have Harmon XXV and would typically use about 1-2 bags of pellets. This warm (50's high soon) about half a bag to 1 bag. 9kw is about $.54 cents. Pellets closer to $6 bucks with delivery (Newport WA)

Our family owns a summer home, one story ranch on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We installed Mitsubishi splits for three bedrooms, the living room and three season porch which is now a 3.75 season porch as it's not insulated. They have been flawless for the last 6 years, other than routine cleaning etc. Good Choice!

That’s a nice system. I’m going to keep my Trane 3T 16 seer system as long as I can. It’s 16 years old. Blower was replaced 5 years ago. It will probably be rep with a 4T unit. It would be really nice to get rated capacity at 17F. I just looked I get rated capacity at 50F and 55% at 17 F. Gotta have those heat strips.

I was considering the 4 ton version. This Mitsy is a 3 ton system, but combined with this particular air handler the capacity is raised a bit to 40K BTUS. The combo provides a better COP for heating which is the goal. There is a notable improvement in heat output at the registers already over our Am Std/Trane Heritage 16, 2-stage system.

Nice. My 4 ton system is 17 years old (the compressor was replaced 11 years ago)... so I am watching things closely.

I was really hoping that the variable speed Infinity systems would come down in price... hasn't happened.

There is a refrigerant switchover in process, giving me another reason to wait. What refrigerant does your new system use?

The new system is using R454B refrigerant. Looking at the AHRI certificate, it's rated at SEER2: 21.20, EER2: 12.10, HSPF2 (zone IV) 9.20.

I read about R454B. It sounds like a pretty functional replacement.
