I've been frequenting our local land fill this spring.
You can only dump natural clippings, branches and
trees. They in turn grind it up and make mulch. I've been getting
the locust,osage and white and red oak out before it's ground up.
Nice rounds, mostly 16-18 inch, Might want to check out your area
if you haven't already. Check first. They told me knock yourself out.
 
Go to the dump & come back with more than you took.
Used to do that, called it shopping. Part of my wood shed came from the dump.

Shopping for firewood better yet.
Great idea, not at our dump though. can't even go shopping there anymore. <>
 
I've scrounged an occasional piece or two at the compost site here in our township. Usually, there isn't much there......
You CAN load up your truck with all the compost, mulch and grass clippings you want, for free. But they charge you if you want them to load it for you.
 
I recall several years ago a tornado went through town. They hauled tons of trees and parts of trees to the city park (huge area not used) and let anybody get what they wanted. Sadly, little was taken.
