New season, another break-in with the Tribute

Hello again to all. I know that I didn't post that much last year, but I did LOTS of reading and lurking. Thanks to everyone. I have one season under my belt, so if anyone has questions on a Hearthstone Tribute, I'd be happy to try to answer them. Just cleaned the stove of stray old ashes and one lethargic wasp. The break-in fire is going now (might do another as it's been humid these past couple of days).

Here's a photo that I posted last year of our baby which kept up with (almost) the coldest of temps to heat the whole house.

We would, but at that point the pets really move in and soak it all up on us!

We have the same stove - I hope will be installed in time for this heating season. Sounds like you really love it. My question is how many square feet you try to heat and what climate zone you live in? Just curious...by the way she still looks brandy new!

That was last years picture ! It's the same, only that I need to clean the glass. We're in the Northeast...Rochester, NY. The house is 1490 Sq.ft. and it seemed to do the job until it got really cold for a long stretch. Our house isn't insulated that well either.

Looks real nice. Do you have a rear heat shield? It would help reflect some heat from the back.

Wow, I'm impressed considering that is the smallest stove they offer. We made a huge difference in our house just by building an insulated hatch for our attic. We've taken advantage of the energy credits and have done some upgrading with new fiberglass entry doors and insulated the joists in the basement. This year I'm going to seal the switches and outlets with gaskets and fill all the plumbing and electrical holes from the basement to the upstairs. So far has made a big difference. It's been in the 50's outside and 71F in the house and the boiler hasn't come on yet.

If you could let me know what's working for you as far as operating the stove, I'm very excited to learn about it.

First for the previous question, no there is no heat shield. I didn't have the clearance for that, if I remember correctly. I used to have a fireback there before the stove was put in, but I was told to take it out for the stove.


As far as operating...hmmm. I'm not sure...do you have a specific question or area that you want me to cover??

Looks like a mini heritage. So what is your cruising temp? I mean, the stove top temp, I didn't see a thermo but if you use one, what is your target temperature?

The stove top broke, so I just bought a laser thermometer on sale at Sears. I love it! If I recall from last year, it ranged from 350-550. The top varies depending on where it's pointed. Stack temps are fun to judge with the laser. every inch up the stack shows cooler temps. I'll repost once I run it full during the cold.

i'm glad to hear that your stove worked so well in Rochester, NY. makes me confident that the same stove will be fine in my place. my place is about 1200 sq feet and we are in south jersey ( no where near as cold as your area) and i was nervous that it wouldn't keep up because its so small..... so far we have been good. it has only been down to the upper 30's and the stove has been great so far.. it heats the far end of the house just fine... i was wondering what it would do when we drop into the 20's. sounds like i should be ok...

Laser thermometer at Sears? What a great idea.

In my case, it has been a long process of getting my chimney ready to accommodate a Hearthstone Homestead (in fact, guys are putting the finishing touches on the liner installation as we speak). I hope to have the stove attached within in a week. Currently, it sits in the living room, mocking me from the corner.

Obviously a lot depends on your house configuration, and also what temps you are used to. We're lucky because the stove is in our main living area, and the stairs going up are right off that.
