No kindling required

In my area it's been unseasonably cool, so unlike a typical early May I've been using the wood stove. I don't have any more kindling on hand. I was surprised to see I've been able to start a fire without it - just some newspaper. I'll still split kindling next season, but didn't expect the fire to start relatively easily without it.

I always have an extra bag of Match light Charcoal on hand. 2 pieces and its flame on!

i gave up using kindling and started using the blowtorch and cardboard... probably not the best but it works!

I have exceptional draft. Starts are never a problem. Some newspaper, a few lathe boards, and flame on. Remodeled entire house, soooo, plenty of lathe boards to burn.

I believe I have a great draft as well. If I open the door for the ash tray the fire flares up big time, which is probably why the fires start without kindling. Nice having leftover wood from the home project for the stove.

Another advantage to splitting asap is green wood often has kindling sized pieces attached to every third split. They break off easy once the split is seasoned.

Sure is. I prolly have enough for 10 years! Lathe boards are fantastic for kinlin.

Holy Grail, or close to it, is eco logs. The wax/cardboard logs break apart by hand to any size you want. It burns fast and hot, you can start a fire with a few slivers. One log gets you a shoe box full of slivers.
