Yo,
Looks like another sizable storm comin' tomorrow. My school's already called it a half day (10:22) and many others in the area have called it. 7-12 inches last report.

Looks like I'll be lighting the stove for the weekend a little early, and since we've got almost two weeks this year, it may be running until the New Year!

SML

ya looks like snow for me and then sleet... i live in the sleet belt i hate it.

LOL, when I lived back east everyone went into a panic when snow was mentioned. Here in northwestern Montana, we're in the middle of another major snow storm (along with artic, sub-zero temps still); we're getting 2 feet this time on top of the 1 foot that got dumped when the arctic air moved in, but the kids still go to school.

thinkxingu,

You don't say where your from? Central CT, we're expecting 8 - 14 will be at work we never close early. My stove I fired up today when I got home, got wood from my new delivered pile to the rack on the deck and am ready for the weekend. Must go out Saturday and finish the wifes Xmas shopping and then home for another storm on Sunday.

Smoking,
I'm in southern NH, just above the snow line between MA and NH. Weird: we'll have 6 inches of snow here and less than 10 miles down the road it's rain!

I live in Upstate New York. We too are under a severe snow storm warning. We are supposed to get 9-12inches on Friday. Oh well just another December day in Upstate New York. Just add it to the snow already on the ground. We got dumped on pretty good Wednesday. To the point of by the time I finished shoveling the driveway I had to do it all over again!! The kids still had school! They were bummed out. I willlet you know what our snowfall total is tomorrow if anyone wants to know.

I hear ya argus, same here...but that is less of that white crap I have to shovel.
I do wish if were going do something like what is coming --- let it be all snow so I can
stay home and stoke the stove :)

I live upstate too, but ALL THE WAY upstate right on the canadian border. According to the weather channel, we are supposed to get 1-2".

The news is calling for a foot of snow here so tptb are closing schools etc...I just brought in about 3 days of wood. Seriously though 1 foot isn't jack around here but best of luck to everyone else.

We've been getting 2-3" per hour here but looks like it is letting up now. The back side of the storm is close so I'll be out pushing snow soon.

I'm bummed....... 10+ inches out there already. Using the riding mower with a plow, getting stuck is real easy. Tossed a chain off a tire so have to put that back on. Taking a break after 1-1/2 hrs. of working out there. Not nearly done and now have to go back and put the chain on. Love snow, really I do. Just wish one of our sons would stop by and give me a hand as we have about 90' long x 20' wide driveway plus a very large turn around area. I have to keep the driveway clear for medical emergencies for hubby so can't let the snow sit. I'm cooling off now and then back out there. Wish me luck! If I think of it I will add a photo when I'm done. Woodpile is covered, a load was already stored in the attached garage so we will be warm.

Hey Shari, our driveway is over 300 feet long plus a circle by the house. Then I also plow a mile path that my wife uses for her daily walking exercise! Sure glad I don't have to shovel all this stuff.

Dennis,

We had to sell our (my) 1952 Willys this year. It wasn't running anymore and the city was after us because "storage of non-operational vehicles is in violation". We got tagged on it once and slid by but with my luck lately I figured they would soon get us again - the second time fines are $1,000 per day until removed. Wanna see 'my baby' that I miss so much? I used to ride along with my Dad in this when he plowed snow and I was a teeny bopper. Dad & I used this to get to the woods and cut firewood and hauled wood home in this vehicle. I learned how to drive stick shift in this.... just a few moons ago.... Ha! Just remembered! We used the Willys to haul firewood up to the church on the hill and stoke their woodstove before church services. Ugh! I am REALLY getting old, aren't I????

Shari, that jeep has probably seen many a mile. We used to have a 52 Willys jeep station wagon. Loved that old crate. Our uncle drove one as his only car until into the 80's. Now that is making things last!

Get that thing running and push some snow or haul some more wood!

When her 4 cylinders were running she purred like a kitten. There is nothing like it today! Stick shift on the floor, 4-wheel lock outs on the tires (no 'flip a switch' inside this cab!). As she got older the old truck bed shinnied once you got going around 40 mph - you had to jerk the steering wheel to get all parts of the body shinnying in the same direction at the same time. I think there is a bicycle chain in there somewhere between the bed and the cab holding one thing to another. What a hoot and a great memory!

Does Wisconsin have a cheap farm type plate? We have farm plates and then Agriculture plates here in NH that are wicked cheap. If I was you I'd just slap a cheap plate on it and then you'd be all set.

Hey Dennis, we're getting the front side of your snow. Predicting 8/16" but was your snow light. I hope so; maybe it will just blow off my roof and I'll be all ready for Sunday's storm. Be safe.

Dill,

We had 'collector' plates on it which "should" have made it okay - but not in this city! The city codes are very strict - the vehicle must be able to be started and must be road worthy. The gas tank was rusted out. Last time we ran it we put a 5 gallon gas tank in the bed of the truck and ran a gas line to the engine. Ha! Ha! Plus we have a nosey neighbor who trolls our neighborhood looking for 'things'.... Don't ya' just love people like that?

We have a historical society here, where the church on the hill is that Dad & I used to stoke the pot belly stove. The church is non-functional, just a historic building open for tours a couple times a year. A few years ago I toured it and told the lady in charge that I remember attending the church as a 1950's child. She said that was impossible as the last services in the church were in the 1920's. Hmmm... So, I did a search of the old newspapers and found an article that stated the church was reopened in the 1960's and rented out to another denomination for awhile. Ha! That is when I was there! I brought a photocopy of this news article to the historical society lady later on. She huffed and puffed and said, "That did not happen." Oh well, at least I have a good memory of stokin' that stove!

Sorry if this thread has gotten off topic - snow storms like we are having right now just remind me of things when I was a kid & the fond memories of hauling wood with my Dad to the church in the Willys.

(I guess we better stop discussion about my 'baby' or risk this thread getting sent to the ash can.)

I hear ya. Some of these posts flat crack me up! Calling off school 'cause its snowing and blowing? And, its makes national news headlines to boot....

Just another winter day here..

Yup, just another winter's day here. Opened up the doors for some fresh air. It's all of 58 degrees outside. Bit chilly. Guess I'll let the fire die down so I can clean up the windows. Maybe this evening we'll need another fire! It's interesting reading all your COLD stories. I've always wanted to have at least one Very Cold winter in my life...

Okay, a couple of pictures:

Under the camo tarp is our woodpile. The railing next to it is set on cement blocks so the pile is about 5' tall x 7 rows 8' long. That's one of our son's who was gracious enough to come out and help clear the snow. As a scale with the depth of snow, our son is over 6' tall and the snow is almost knee deep for him.

Y'all probably won't believe me, but "Been there, done that!" When we lived in Colorado, we had a 90' by 20' concrete driveway (one of the only ones in the county) that I kept clear with a 5 hp snowblower. Frankly, I thought it was fun--until I flash froze the moisture on my eyes one day. The snow was so dry that once thrown into the air it was gone with the wind. It was so dry that the kids could not make snowballs from it. When we moved back to Texas, I brought the blower with me.

We had 11" one time and I got the ol' blower out, got 'er runnin' and cleared our walk and drive, the neighbor's walk and drive and half the neighborhood. In the time I was doing that I had 10-12 people come by and offer me $100 to clear their walks and drives, but by then I had been out in the teen degree cold and 30 mph winds plenty enough. Should have sold the blower to the guy who offered me $500 for it. Haven't used it since. That was in '97 or '98. I keep it because of the Tillman Law of Disposition of Goods, which states: "You can keep something for 30 years and never use it, but the moment you get rid of it, you will need it within two weeks."

Now, when folks here complain about the rain, I respond in two ways: I tell 'em that they can't drink sunshine! and You don't have to shovel it! Colorado almost provided one of my Bucket List items--I wanted to be snowed in for three days! Only made it for just over 1.5, but we, and especially the kids, thought it was great! It was sad to see it end.
