About 8 years ago or so I contacted a cemetery as I saw downed Mulberry trees and asked permission to take some out and they said "take all you want, it's helping us!". A few weeks ago I drove past this cemetery again and on the corner but still their property I saw some nice sections of Cherry that had been taken down awhile ago as it was getting dry already so I called and asked about that and the guy put me on hold and got back and said "not right now, maybe in a few weeks" and I thought about it and said "okay, I don't see what difference a few weeks will make but I'll try again". The only thing I can come up with is maybe the wood is promised to someone who said they were coming back for it, but they might have said "so and so says he's taking it but that's been two months now, we'll give him a few more weeks and if he doesn't get it we'll let this guy take it".

Do you guys see any other explanation? I figured pressing the issue wouldn't get me anywhere and maybe they would then just say "no" so I left it go; if I get it, fine, if not that's okay too.

I'd suspect Memorial Day observances may be a part of the decision to have you wait. It would have been easier to say so directly, but I'd think a cemetery custodian would be concerned about someone cutting and losing being a disturbance.

That could be too, didn't think of that. I'll know if I call back in a couple of weeks and get a run around!

@pernox nailed it. Anyone here who has seen photos of my trailer getting loaded probably already realizes I do a lot of wood cutting and grounds keeping at a church. Every time a tree comes down, someone is quick to claim it, but only half of them ever get around to doing the job, and that’s where I come in.

Some member of the church said they want it, so they’re giving them the chance to come get it, before giving up and letting you take it. Standard procedure. They will want it gone before the next big fundraiser event or picnic, if you know when that is.
