Could this be oak? I am leaning towards no because of the large rings and my knife stuck into the end fairly easy.
Thanks!

It does not look like the red oak in our area of the U.S.

Can you split it and post a pic?

No too much hassle to go back there if it is not oak. Just looking for a guess. Like I said, I don't think it is oak. Cotton wood or something.

If its Norway maple it is worth getting....

Prior to this website I had never heard of Norway maple. Guessing we don't have much around here if any.

Not oak or norway maple. Not sure what it is. Midwest has different trees than northern NJ.

Not oak. I think it is Cottonwood.

I think cottonwood as well but some split pics would be good

Does it feel heavy or light? Fresh cut oak has a distinct, pleasant smell. Always reminds me of high school wood shop where we built some cool stuff.

I did smell it. I remember oak having a stronger smell than this when fresh cut. I think the rings tell the story. Oak just does not grow that fast, at least not around here.

I'll third cottonwood. Large furrows on the bark and that paperish inner bark on the bark pic give it away

Cottonwood.
