Oddball storage

Hey guys. Fall weather has come early so I've got in gear a little early this year. Tired of my pile of my uglies sitting around where my neighbor could see it, so I put this together. The concrete was on a slope so I had to cut each upright to a different length.

Nasty looking cuts there! You will definitely learn how to better cut those limbs off so you don't get so many. Especially like that one toward the top of the picture. You'll end up with some looking like wedges, but they won't be uglies then.

I have more chunks and uglies than ever in my life. The wood for the next season after this one came from a tree service dropping them at my neighbors house. They don't understand split length limbs and rounds. They just want it on the ground and a check.

Yes I like my cuts 16-17", Most of the scrounge wood is in odd sizes that leave me with 3 or 4inch cutoffs.

Amen to that, same thing I've been getting, friend who is an arborist, and moving out of town has been giving me everything. Here is a pic with my uglies bin made out of pallets in the foreground, I've got another bin exactly like that one and another that is twice that size, all FULL.

Nicely made bin. I tend to stack mine on top of my finished stacks, they usually get burnt first and out of the way

WOW! Nice looking stack! I'm liking the pallet bin for uglies. How much wood do you have there? Looks like there is some under the white tarp.

Thanks for the nice comments, I never would have considered getting that far ahead if it weren't for Hearth.com, the uglies bin idea came from here also.

The stacks are double row 18" splits about 4.5 feet high and 65 feet long, with some more uglies in between, maybe 7 cords each. The back stack is all spruce, the front stack is a mix of red maple and birch. The stacks are tent covered using 6 mil plastic sheeting attached to a frame made of small diameter spruce. The cross members of the frame that go through the stack really help stabilize the double row, the weight of the stack on the cross member as well as the weight of the outside rails help hold down the tent, which so far haven't budged to 60mph winds. It is my attempt to get the wood as ready to burn as possible as soon as possible. One more 35 foot stack just like those gets me about 18 cords total, about 3 years worth, now all I have to do is replace what I burn each winter. Here is a picture from the end.

I've got about 30' of chain-link fence. I'm going to cut it into two 15' sections and run them down each side of a row of 2'-wide pallets. I figure the air will blow through that pretty well....

I did one of my uglies bins that way, with some scraps of welded wire fence I had, works well, good way to use up the fence leftovers

Funny as I look at the pics of your huge stacks of wood I feel like such an amateur. LOL.

I'm putting up another rack along the garage this weekend that will put my storage at house up to 2 2/3 cords. That will last my little house about 1.5 winters or for some of you it would last a couple nights.LOL.

Schlot, nice looking bin there! Good idea, too. I've found that I usually get a LOT of uglies when I'm getting wood that someone else cut. On my tree jobs, I cut the lengths very specific....so they are all uniform for the most part.

Dave, that is a really nice looking hoard of wood!! Time to join the Firewood Hoarder's Club! (there's a link below in my signature). I really like your use of the spruce logs for making the structure of your stacks.....also helps with the tent top, I am sure! If I don't get around to building my shed next summer (I sure hope to), I may do something like that to get the cover above the stack and help shed the rain better..... Keep up the good work!!
