Old defiant adapter?

Hello:
I have come into posession of an older Vermont castings Defiant model stove and I am intending to install it but had a question - this stove only has an 8" oval connection in the rear - is there some means of adapting this to become a vertical installation? I have begun to do some research and one of the manf of the pipe indicated (on an elbow for instance) it was not recommended for rear installation and as there would need to be an oval to round section and then a 90 elbow at some point I was curious.

A Tee connector will let you attach to a vertical liner and then run horizontal to the stove adapter. This tee connector will also have a clean out area on the bottom of the tee. 90 degree elbows make it a little more inconvenient to clean.

I expect the resident Defiant expert will be right along but I believe the original Defiant's were top flue connections.

Be aware a Defiant is a very large heater, designed for drafty large homes. They like to crank out lots of heat and will overheat a typical room. Trying to run them at low output is exercise in patience at best and frustration at worst.

Hey Thanks! I assume this is an oval to round? I do not think this is a 10" tho...I will have to see if my ellipse math is correct...

Maybe I confused you - The 10" is the length of the tee pipe, the diameter is yet to be determined. You had mentioned that the exhaust was coming out the rear, and you needed something that would make a connection from the oval to round adapter from your stove, and this Tee is what you need to go vertical, after you get the adapter, if you will be using a round Flex Liner.

i believe you would have to change the top and back of the stove to make it a top exhaust.

It would be worth checking to see if V.C. makes an oval to round tee. At one time they (or somebody) did make an oval to round elbow, but definitely go with a tee here. Definitely.

Here is a pic of the stove - it is a defiant and the inside has 1975 cast in - and as Double-d indicated it came with a homemade "T" assembly as shown - seems like that is the easiest method rather than trying to get the top changed out.
