Hello all, ive just bought an old Fire with Mirelle logo on it, when i open it up it has the adjustable grille base and i was told its a wood burner but the base for the fire is an oval approx 3 x 6 inch, is this for small lumps of wood or coal ? many thanks

It looks a bit more like a coal burner. Is the stub below the door attached to a shaker for the grate?

Yes that looks like a shaker grate with air supplied from under the grates. It's primarily a coal burner though it will burn wood, but less efficiently.
