Ooooops!

Well I got started on my projects this weekend and it didn't start well! I bought a Fireview last week to replace an existing stove, I also removed a brick hearth so we can get our hardwood floors refinished. I cleaned the chimney for the wood stove first, it was going fine until my brush got stuck. I knew I was at the top of the chimney so I didn't push up anymore, I pulled down pretty hard and the brush wasn't stuck anymore. I then heard a loud crash and then the profanity echoing through out the neighborhood from my wife......... The chimney cap popped off and came crashing down on the hood of her car and then bounced off hitting the side of my truck. I don't mind a few scratches but my wife loves her charger and a few scratches is what she got! On a side note, with the cap off I could see that I did a great job cleaning the chimney! Clean as a whistle...... Needless to say, I took my wife out for a great dinner and drinks, lots of drinks!

I started my hearth today as well, I still have to put the cement board on and then tile and trim it but that's going to have to wait until next weekend. I'm getting my floors refinished starting Tuesday so I would like to have my hearth done and stove installed next weekend. Can't wait for my first fire!!

LOL, well I am Irish so........... It has been a rocky few weeks but things are coming together and the end result is to be sitting in my recliner on Sunday watching football with a roaring fire and if I have to cough up some money, pull muscles and bleed it's all worth it in the end.

Thanks man! You're right about that, if I were to heat using just oil I would be well over $2000. for the season! I spen on average about $600. a year for wood.

Yes, he told me to light 2 or 3 smallish fires to season the stove. He also told me to open the windows when I do because the paint and cement will create some pretty nasty fumes.

fwiw, we got no paint smell from the stove but did from the new black pipe.

Here is how we like the burn-in fires and this has been approved by Woodstock:

1. First fire should be some kindling only. Light it and just let it burn itself out.

2. Second fire. Start with kindling and add a small or two small splits. Light it and let it burn out.

3. Third fire is the big one. Use 3 or 4 splits on the kindling. This time you should be able to engage the cat. Enjoy the heat and when this is done, the stove is ready to go.

4. Enjoy all winter long.

Nice, thanks for that Dennis! I haven't read through the manual yet with all the projects I have going on but I definitely will before the burning season. After working 12 hours tomorrow I have to move all of our furniture from the first floor to the cellar so they can start working on the floors, going to be a busy week.........

You are welcome. You are in for a treat when you light that thing up. I'll never forget when we got our first rolling fire. Beautiful. Then I'll also never forget watching that temperature gauge go up towards that 700 mark. Wasn't bad until it hit 680 and was still climbing. Stopped just shy of 700. Whew! We got a bit over 700 last night with very little wood in it.

Thank you Mike, I will post pictures of the finished project when I'm done. I'm taking pictures as I go just in case the insurance company is interested. I followed the manual for the recommended hearth size instead of the minimum. I went thicker than I needed, two sheets of 23/32" plywood, a sheet of 24 gauge sheetmetal and 1/2" wonderboard. 150 1-5/8" long Backer-On Screws. Believe it or not I need more screws!
