pellet 3" horizontal thimble question

We have an ICC Excel horizontal thimble. The opening in the thimble leaves a gap around the pipe on both the interior and exterior sides. The exterior also has notches. There were just the two sides of the thimble in the box. Are we missing something? I am assuming we should not be able to see daylight through our install. Should there be some kind of coupler or gasket around the pipe?

The exterior annulus only is supposed to be sealed with silicone sealant. The exterior thimble plate also has brackets that are used too secure the pipe to the thimble.

Seal around the pipe on the exterior thimble with high temp silicone. You are not missing any parts. That is normal for ICC.

Really? Seems like alot of silicone? And why the notches?

Shouldnt use alot of silicone unless you got 3 inch pipe going through a 4 inch thimble. If sealing the inside portion of the thimble is easier you could do that as well. All Icc thimbles come with the notches, I havent heard exactly why they are there. The only reason I can think of is that the notches allow for more air flow in the outside of the pipe if you only seal the inside thimble. The Icc pipe only requires a one inch clearance to combustables so I dont see air flow being a concern. Both of my stoves are vented with 3 inch ICC and I sealed the outside thimble with high temp silicone and the dealer I bought the pipe from said that is all thats needed. No worries!

Thanks. We just didn't want to do it wrong. And the notches definitely added confusion. We could have had the job done today had we known but all the stores were closed.
