Western Mass.
Here is corie with me and his new pellet unit - will be in production in a couple months.
Also, a neat Bosca pellet insert (nice lines) as well as a Hestia pellet stove - new products that spreads the pellets out wide and makes for a really nice looking flame!

Nice stuff! That Bosca insert is definately a looker and that's a nice concepton the Hestia stove. Anything new in woodburning lines?

My immediate take is not much innovation in wood burning. The manufacturers are always behind the curve, and as I mentioned before there has been very little new R&D;in the wood burning arena for a decade or more.

There is a little contest going within the industry to create a clean burning OPEN fireplace, and RSF (ICC, Excel) seems to have the top entry so far...with some impressive numbers. Pic enclosed.

Personally, I think the idea of open clean burning fireplaces is nice, but at the same time the effort is probably mostly a pissing contest. One industry expert from the test labs said that NO MATTER WHAT, an open fireplace takes in too much air. It might be better for the real world for the manufacturers to have a contest to produce a wood stove which was user friendly and worked with cord wood, or a pellet stove that actually works without multiple service calls.
:-)

But, as I am starting to think, a lot of people in sales and marketing depts spend too much time impressing themselves, their peers and their superiors and too little time impressing the public.

Are you talking government here again Craig? :)

Actually, I came up with that through by looking through two very glossy and FULL trade mags here last night, with tens of thousands of dollars worth of ads in each.......all speaking to the same people (dealers), who really don't read the mags hardly anyway! So I thought up some kind of a new brilliant marketing campaign for Hearth.com.....but I have to develop the idea. Maybe a sales manager looking at himself and his product in the mirror and commenting on how nice it is (the trade pubs) as compared to a sales manager showing millions of actual customer their product (Hearth.com!)....

I have to come up with the right metaphor.

Here is a soapstone hybrid which has a full cast iron inside with soapstone outer AND uses a 6" insulated chimney. Nice in terms of easy installation and still some of the masonry heater effect.

This is yours truly with Dan McFarland, the guy who makes the electronic stove control. We picked the winner of the ipod and 5 Hearth.com hats and I assume Dan will be announcing it here - or at min. contacting the winners.

Looking forward to hearing about these new pellet stoves. Nice Lookers!

Are pellet stoves rated on an EPA efficiency scale like woodstoves, and if so how do most pellet stoves compare to a newer EPA compliant wood burning unit? I was thinking this would be a good alternative for my brother, someone who doesn't like cutting and splitting for hours...

just got back myself about 45 minutes ago, handed out a few goodies from atlanta, my daughter collects hardrock cafe shirts and the atlanta one was right next to the hotel. got to meet several from the gang down there (craig included) "thanks for the hat web! , it will be well worn (look mom, im a billboard!!) lol

a personal highlight for me was getting to meet and chat with Dane Harmon, i described to my wife on the phone afterwards when she asked "who's he?" i said , picture a kid who builds model rockets shaking hands with neil armstrong. i have admired him from afar for many years and getting to talk stoves for a few was quite special for me. also caught up to several old friends who i had never met in person , Mary Carson from GAMA , who was very helpful to a very green tech years ago concerning our gas program (she really is a doll, wonderful person) several pellet manufacturer reps as well, i also was able to meet with the guys from pelletsales.com (thanks again web!) this will be very helpful in allowing me to give folks who cannot find pellets locally to get fuel. this i believe is the same group that Zeta gets fuel from, i have to say they seem to be on top of things , i will be talking to them again soon im sure its too good a program not to.

all in all i will say that the industry has a lot going for it coming in to next season , the manufacturers and dealers i spoke with were candid and optimistic the stoves looked fantastic and overal the manufacturers were quite open to me when i walked through with my "kid in a candy store" look clearly evident on my face. of the whole show only one manufacturer woldnt let me in (im not saying who, goes against my nature to do so) several even took the time to explain their stuff to me, that about floored me as im wearing a badge identifying me as a manufacturer. was a great experience , im already looking forward to reno ( i just gotta convince the boss to let me go.

Xpress, you might want to put that question in the pellet room, as I'm gonna put pictures in this one and keep it here for a while. I might even erase these other posts....or move 'em, cause then this thread can stay as a pic record of the show. If anyone else took pics, please upload them!

Corie, I will zip up and email you the pics of your booth!

*nice looking insert!

that bosca chimemea looks like a flat screen TV.

thanks for the pics boss!

Hey Guys,

I was able to go to the show; I live about 45 miles from DT Atlanta. Craig got me a pass. It was some kind of display. The GA World Congress Center is an extremely large site, don't know how to compare the size for where the HPBA show was, maybe 2-3 football fields long by just as much wide. It was great to see the stoves up close, got to see everything I wanted to except for Napoleon. I did get to see the Englander and PE units up close, great looking products.

Thanks again Craig,

SG

that's cool and all, but you got any good pics to post Lucky Gent?
wouldn't mind seeing more.

Mike,
You spoke with Dane Harman, Did he say anything about the future of his company, anything about there customer service, or anything that we as Harman owner's would be interested in?

Thanks Anthony

Here are some pics of the outside burn area as well as a pic of a new Blue color that Jotul is offering.

both dane and his folks seemed confident , the status quo should be the same , however with the backing of HHt they should be in really good shape , especially in the short run, persopnally i have been confident that harman as a name brand was not going away , feeling i got talking to them was quite reassuring that they will be doing fine

ok, no worries this time around. but you gotta bring a camera if you go next time.

i had my camera , however there were mixed info on shooting photos. a sign at the door said no photography, but on the back of our badges it said photos only with consent of vendors, i shot some of our booth and stove , but wasnt looking to ruffle feathers so i left the camera at the booth when we went to the outside area, i shold have carried it , virtually all of the venders were very outgoing im sure i could have taken pictures without too much flak. heck , while i was in the "rais" booth , one very good looking rep (blonde female taller than me and drop dead pretty) literally went through their whole principle of burning , showed me cutaways and explained it all to me, i about fell out was thinking , the hell with the stoves i want a picture with her!!!!! but damn she was smart too, my compadres had to literally drag me outta that booth.

on that note , i would publicly like to thank the manufacturers who were kind enough to indulge the "kid" in me had a great time in many booths, Rais, VC who had a couple of OMG!! inserts burning), Hitzer (who had a honey of a coal stoker running) Hearthstone, Harman (of course), Majestic, and many others. bear in mind folks i was wearing a badge with a color code that let these vendors know that i wasnt a buyer but a vendor myself, and they did not have to let me in, but with one exception whom i will not name i was treated wonderfully.
