Question:
Looking up the chimney of a prefab fireplace from the open damper area it appears that the interlocking collars at the flue sections have been pried (the sheet metal appears to be wrinkled into the open flue area). I don't know if this is o.k. or if the chimney has not been properly installed.

Of course, not looking at it..I cannot give you a definitive answer. However, I have seen crimps on this type of pipe that are quite tapered..that is, the seal may be good a bit further up the joint...
If it is new, talk to the installer or manufacturer about what you see. Or, have a certified chimney sweep take a look.<p>
Many sweeps even have video cameras which can be dropped down the flue for a close inspection.
