Well, I did it! I've been looking for a pellet stove for quite some time and I finally bought one. I was really really considering the Castle Serenity, but I think it was just a bit too small for my needs. So I've been watching craigslist like a hawk for the last few weeks and I think I did ok. I got a used Harman accentra with over 5 feet of pl pipe and 2 elbows for 800.00. The stove is a 2003, I know that sounds really old but it was only actually used for 6 years, and at that it just heated the basement. It was in his home but he was away on a permanent assignment for 3 years, there was a few years it was warm and they didn't burn it at all. I'm a tech by trade, it looks in great shape, clean, quite, could use some paint but otherwise good...no rust on it...even the chain drive. So how did I do?

Congrats and welcome. That seems to be a good deal and if everything checks out more towards a great deal. While you have it out I would go ahead and check everything out. Do anything and everything that needs to be done or maintained. If in question go ahead and fix and / or upgrade everything you can.

Search here and look for things that you would want to check out and now is the time to put some elbow grease to it with an insanely thorough clean and taking things out for cleaning and checking over. This will also familiarize you with the stove and how it works etc.

I did this with my used PC45 and very glad I did. There's a ton of help to be had here.

Thanks for the "warm" welcome everyone.! (Pun intended!LOL) I plan on going over the stove really well while it's in my garage before she comes inside. I'd like to paint it but the wife thinks it's "fine" the way it is..hmmmmm..well see . I plan on giving it a good hot stove temp burn while it's still outside, especially if i paint it, let her fume off and such. I'm itching to get it done but I'm stuck 5hrs from home till the weekend. FWIW they were asking 1000.00 for it originally, so I'm happy. And if anybody is interested he has a PF-100 that he's asking 1500.00 for, located near shinglehouse PA. ( msg me and I can fwd his number to you) He's in his 70's and can't haul pellets anymore..switched to gas to save his legs.


The air bypass mod helps prevent "gummy stove syndrome", it adds a bit of air into the auger path to help keep exhaust gases from getting trapped and working it's way up into the hopper. It can cause a sticky build up over time. I think I'll do this just as a preventive measure while I've got easy access.

If you paint your stove, plan on several outside burns before you bring it in!! And yes all paints differ in chemical make up and may cure after one burn better safe than sorry . also plan on two good Windows open burns after install to gas off sealant . if your fam. Is like mine crying wolf at the slightest smell you will here about it I just did the same thing you are doing now with same stove. Ps good luck.

Do a search for gummy stove and you're sure to find it. Not all stoves need it. I'm sure others here can advise on it much better than I can.

If I decide to clean the outside instead of paint, what should I use?

(broken image removed) Brush or steel wool the metal of any surface rust and rub on a coat or two of Meeco ReD Devil stove polish. Will make the stove almost new looking.

Works well for the between painting or after season polish to stave off any rust. Used many many years on wood stoves and their pipes.
