Ok so if they are going to be to big, how about a 5yr old Lopi Endeavor we found for $400, or a 2yr old Vermont Castings Intrepid 2 for $650. We dont know a thing about how to run newer non-cat stoves, thats why we are looking at the buck, or a cat stove, but for a non-cat the IR sounded like a good deal. . .

C'mon, JD, you know the correct answer is 4 cu ft + cat FTW! He clearly likes the BKK. The B91 is the next best thing, or maybe the Country Flame BBF. You will pay through the nose for parts for a used VC w/o warranty. The Lopi would be your best bet if you want to go non-cat. . .there's no end to the Lopi love around here. Leave the IR for the man in l0ve. (We all know that the best one to look at is almost never the best one to live with.)

Wow- closer to me..... even better! I was sure hoping you weren't gonna say it was over in Iowa someplace- haha! But for that price it'd be well worth the extra drive! I'm up near Valentine and my kids live and go to school in Blair, so I get down that way fairly often....its about equal distance for me to take 20/275 through O'neil and Norfolk as it is for me to take highway 2 to GI and then I-80 on east, so wherever it's at is sure no problem! Fingers are crossed that your buddy doesn't want it!

Not bad, but the other two stoves are arguably better, definitely younger, and nearly as inexpensive as the DW (not really a giveaway at $600, and more likely to need parts/rebuilding sooner than the others).

Ok, he went with the buck 91 the guy included a new cat and door seal for $600, anyway in the book it says alternatives for wall protection for a 9in clearance from wall, a non-combustable wall with a 1 inch gap out from the combustable wall, we are going to use durarock and tile for the wall protection how far up the wall does that need to be? above the stove or all the way to the top of the wall its a 9ft ceiling. thanks JD

If you want to achieve the closest clearances the stove must be connected with double-wall pipe or, if single wall, with pipe shields. The stove's wall shield must be on 1" spacers, open at the bottom and top, extending 6" above the top of the flue collar.

I thought it would be a good deal without the cat but I am partial to the 91

If he needs the book on the stove you can download it on the Buck site. It gives all the specs for the wall protection. I already had a double wall pipe and mine is 15 1/2" from the sheetrock and does not even get warm.

I hope that Ron gets a chance at the Quad. That was a steal of a deal. I have the Isle Royale
in plain black and didn't buy it for the looks. The double front doors are an asset, not a hindrance.
They provide complete access to the firebox for laying out a wood load. The andirons are a useful tool and
rotate back and forth easily, as needed to keep wood away from the door windows. If the wood is falling over
the andirons, the stove has been overloaded or loaded improperly. I've heated two homes withthe Isle Royale
and wouldn't trade for any of the stoves mentioned. No criticism of the other stoves at all. Just very
satisfied with what I have.

Hope your friend finds some seasoned wood for that big Buck. His unsplit cut-to-length wood is
going to make things interesting for this winter and would have for any modern stove.

The IR was sold, thats one of the reasons he got the buck. I found another IR and passed the info on to Ron, if they still have that one i might go check it out for him if im in the area this week. Thank you BeGreen, the manual didn't say how far up to go, we are going to use double wall pipe from the stove to the ceiling and then 5ft up the wall with the wall protector. We got the chimney pipe put in today, got it all boxed in upstairs and the roof all done (just as the weather turned to crap, it dropped from 55deg to 28deg and freezing mist started coming down within about 30 min) then we framed the 2 tier hearth up, got the plywood and durarock all screwed down, then about 11:00pm everyone went to my place we put the card table in front of the BK, played some cards had some drinks, and finally at 3:30am everyone went home. Tomorrow morning we start putting tile down and building the wall protector. Hopefully by Thursday we have fire. I thought my BK was heavy, but this buck is a monster. Oh, and we got a new toy for the farm, a Cat track feller buncher logging machine, talk about fun, it'll take a tree down in like a second. I'm going to post some pics and videos when i can get my wife out there to film it. JD

Hi jd, Glad you guys got started on the install.

I worked at Rome Plow Company back in the '70s and '80s when the first tree shears were coming out and we had a line of them. I worked in the shop where they were prototyped so we got all the new stuff before they went into production. These shears are something to see. You will have fun with that.
