Question about Fire Brick in Pacific Energy Summit LE Insert

Hi all,

To make a long story short, I purchased a Pacific Energy Summit insert about a month ago. The store was supposed to install it. But when I had a chimney sweep assess the chimney, I discovered that it needed significant amount of work. So I contacted a chimney specialist. They did a superb job repairing the chimney and as a bonus they offered to run rigid liner (the store was planning to run flex). And as a double bonus, they offered to hook up the insert since I happened to have received it by then. Everything went well. I cancelled the store's installer.

The only problem is that they haven't installed this particular insert in the past, so while putting in the firebrick, we noticed that 2 bricks have one corner cut off diagonally. The install instructions that came with the unit show all the bricks being rectangular. Does anyone know where these two bricks go?

I tried calling the store, but they're closed for 2 weeks (!) for remodeling so I can't reach anyone.

I've attached a picture of the rectangular brick and the special brick with the corner cut off.

If anyone knows where these go, I would really be grateful! Thanks.

That's the first time I have seen this in the Summit. Could be an error. The layout diagram does not show any diagonally cut bricks in this firebox and I can't recall any PE wood stove having an angle cut firebrick. Go by the manual. The dealer should trade them out for square cut bricks.

I finally heard back from PE. So I thought I'd post their response for the benefit of anyone who may run into this in the future.

I think this is dorky, but apparently they're now using a common brick package that also fits their freestanding stoves, which require edge cut bricks. I assume for cost savings.

The support tech told me to just lay the edge cut bricks on the floor of the unit at the right and left end. Here's a picture. That's not elegant IMHO, but that's the official word.

I wonder when they'll get around to updating the manual to reflect this...

That does seem a bit dorky. There is no need for a different brick at that location but I guess that it is mostly covered by the side bricks and back bricks and fills in with ash.

Both my Summits came the same way, and yes, the cut corner bricks go in the right & left inside corners. The wall bricks pretty much cover the cut out corners.
