We are buying a home with a prefabricated fireplace. It looks like it was placed after the home was built, but I am not sure what to expect behind the box fireplace. Does this look like it would be an easy thing to remove? It does not look like it's built into the wall.

Shut the gas off first. There should be a shut-off under the fireplace & another one where the gas line ties into the supply.
There's a vent cap on the outside that will need to be removed, generally with 4 screws holding it in place.
If you examine the sides & top of the cabinet mantel closely, you should see plugs where the fasteners are.
Take a screw gun & drive a drywall screw into the center of each plug & they should come out
revealing the screws holding the cabinet to wooden cleats mounted on the wall. Remove them.
Once they are removed, you will need to remove the gold trim to see how the cabinet is attached to the fireplace.
Remove those fasteners & the cabinet should lift right off.
The fireplace & the venting should pull out as a unit.
Not sure how your hearth riser is installed...
