Renting a splitter

I have hand-split all my wood so far this year. About 5 cords now

. I've got about 3 to 6 more more standing dead locust trees. They are hell to split by hand. Called down to the local rental place and they said its 65 dollars a day for rental of a 30 ton splitter. Was thinking of just cutting a pile and renting a splitter some weekend.

Does the price sound about right? They said if I rent it on a Saturday I can wait till Monday morning to bring it back. Same charge cause there closed on Sundays. Is there anything I need to watch out for? Never rented equipment before.

65 Dead presidents is not too bad of a price for a weekend. Not much to watch out for that I know of.

all the rentals I've done (floor sanders, tile scrapper, stump grinder) haven't been an issue, the big thing is to bring it back clean. Most rental places have a charge for cleaing stated on the contract. a quick blast with the shop vac and/or compressed air took care of it.

Definitely the way to go! $65 is a very good price. Just make sure that you have all of the wood cut up and stacked together. You should be able to split all 3 to 6 cords during the weekend. It is also a good way to save money if you don't want to ultimately purchase a splitter. If you plan to rent a splitter one weekend a year, you can get quite a few years of splitter rental at $65 versus purchasing a new splitter.

$65 is a good price. I rented a 13 T splitter once and it was $100 for the day.
Make sure you have plenty of gas on hand, I ran out and had to go and get more.

Good price. I usually get a pile of stuff I give up on or won't even try to split by hand and rent a splitter. United Rentals by be is $85 per day, last time I got it back in 4 hours and they charged me $45 which isn't an option I found on their price chart. I don't have the room for a splitter nor do I have the motivation to attempt to make room for it so I figure $85 once a year is cheaper then paying for storage somewhere and don't have the maintenance to worry about.

I've rented several tools and equipment over the years both for work and personal life and have never had issues. Even when something broke I have I been pleased with how it was handled.

I once helped a friend with a Home Depot rental splitter. It was much faster with a second person feeding the logs to the beam.

Good price, my local place is $80, and I had to wait till after 2pm to pick it up at closing time on Saturday in order to get it for Saturday and Sunday. It was very hard to get it on Saturday afternoon, usually it was booked 2 months out on those days.

I ended up working on a friends splitter cleaning out the carb and getting it running again, changed his hydraulic oil filter and he let me use it anytime I wanted after that.

I got to the point I could sell enough wood on the side to pay for a new splitter.

I used to do exactly what you do. Split everything by hand, then rent a splitter one weekend per year to catch up. Local pricing is $95/day from a rental shop (Iron & Oak 22 ton with the fast (6 sec.?) cycle time), or $50/day from individuals on Craigslist for Husky 22/28 ton, or similar. I always stuck with the rental shops, not wanting to deal with the liability of breaking someone's personal splitter.

I would pick up at noon on Saturday, and return on Monday by 7am, which counts as a "one day" rental. In that time, I could usually get thru 5 - 6 cords between Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and one time did almost 8 cords with a helper and I really pushing ourselves.

Eventually, I decided it would be easier if I bought a splitter, since I could split a little here and there, as I find time. I'm finding, though, that I never find much time to split here and there, and still do a whole lot of my splitting on just a few days out of each year.

Check around, I work at a rental house, we are closed on Saturdays so the "weekend deal" goes from Friday to Monday morning for a 1 day charge.
Bring it back clean and full of fuel. Remember that we can tell if it was abused, and there is NO stupid insurance. If you get a log stuck on the wedge and rip the valve off when you try to retract it, you DID NOT get it that way Yes we have had people tell us that.

Rentals are around $100.00 here also. I just bought one just so I could have it here all the time.
There hard to get sometimes in this season. Grab that deal 65. is cheap.

not sure what type. they put us on mandatory 6 days a week at work and we are required to stay in alot so that kinda put a dampr on my wood hauling. probly wait a few weeks to get the splitter.

Sounds like you are swamped, but when the day comes......

Only thing to add is, other than gas, make sure you have oil on hand and check it often!

I rented one about 15 years ago that worked like a champ from the sun up till sun down that it ran to play catch up. When I got it, it was right on the full mark for oil. I was glad I decided to check it after I ran the first tank of gas through it....

In that full day, I added several quarts of oil

The machine obviously had a problem, but I was happy to return it no worse for wear when it very easily would have blown apart had it gone a few tanks of fuel without having oil added. I also made very clear to them that I had noticed.

Instead of a hassle over a blown machine, I received an apology and a couple bucks off the bill that I did not ask for to cover the oil.

thanks for all the tips guys. hopefully get all my wood in, in the next couple weeks. got a few months split and stacked already, thank god. getting a lil chilly on my hill.
