Replace Fireplace Panels Questions

A friend of mine found out that I work on wood stoves so asked me to look at his fireplace today. Sure enough the back panel was missing a big chunk and the whole back panel is about to fall apart. They have not used the fireplace for sometime as they did not know how to repair it. I know how to replace the panels but the grate seemed like it was hard to move. I did not want to break anything so did not force it. I could not see the legs on the grate because of the ashes and firewood. Do some of these grates fit in holes in the bottom panel? And is their always a top panel as this fireplace does not appear to ever had one. How can you tell if there should be a top panel?

Then I also noticed the damper had a steel bar on it for lifting the damper but the clip is broken off on tope to hold the damper closed. Sorry no picture of the damper as I did not think of it until after I left. I have no idea of what the clip should look like to weld or bolt a new one on. This might be something I will need to figure out. Thanks for any tips and help you can give.

Find the Id tag it is usually around the front lip of the fireplace somewhere. Then look up the manual and see if the parts are still available

bholler, thanks for the suggestion but I did look everywhere for some information on this fireplace and could not find anything. I am thinking the model number and name might behind the front vents but I did not have a 1/4 inch nut driver with me to take them off. But if all else fails I can cut the new inside panels with my cement blade and make it work. I think the clips that hold in the panels should be very generic as most of them are one inch thick. I will have to figure out why the grate is locked into place and how to make that top piece to hold the damper closed.

Typically the ID is in a narrow strip tag in or on the door frame channel.

Well I go back and look again as I need to measure the side panels as I am thinking it might be better to have all new panels. I will take a picture of how the damper works. It seems odd to me that you have to use some kind of steel rod with a hook or something to open and close the flue damper.
