Live in New England, been using a Jotul 118 that came with the house for about 10 years. It provides enough heat when we burn, mostly on the weekends in winter. Have an opportunity to replace the stove with an EPA stove under a change out program. We want to do some work on the surround, pad, and add a mantle.

We were planning on going with a Jotul F 500 Oslo as we like the view of the fire, but the clearances may require a larger pad than we want. Another possibility is to go with the 118 Black Bear as it is similar to what we have.

Any thoughts on how the Oslo and Black Bear compare with the classic 118? Heat output, ease of use, known issues?

The Oslo is a larger and superior stove IMO. The F118CB's secondary rack was adapted to work with this stove and is not as robust as the F500's design. The Oslo has a larger firebox and should have a longer burntime, but I have not tested this personally.
