Replacing Glass Gaskett - Englander 13

Hello!

Just did the "early bird special" on the Englander site for new gaskets. I just want to replace the glass gasket but figured I might as well get the 2-fer special.

Do I remove the door to replace the glass gasket?

Any tips or cautions I should keep in mind?

Reviving this so that if someone does a search like I did, there will be an answer.

Got the gasket kit in record time from ESW. Once I opened the package and set up the work area, I realized that the new glass gasket is about 3/16" narrower than original gasket. Called customer service and they confirmed that, yes, it is now narrower.

1. I did not remove the door just the 8 metal screws that attach the 4 metal plates.

2. Cleaned the glass really well on a bed of newspaper, (even though there appeared to be no old adhesive residue).

3. Gasket was about 24" longer than needed, so I made a nice clean cut on the starting end, and removed only enough of the backing paper for the one edge. I started upper left and worked counter clockwise. Beware that when peeling off the adhesive protecting paper, the adhesive may stay on the paper --you want it on the gasket! The adhesive is a very very thin layer and I needed to pick up what was stuck on the release paper and put it back on the gasket. The caution is: don't just peel off the paper and assume that the adhesive will stay on the gasket.

4. Since the gasket is now only 3/4" wide, I made sure that the bulk of the gasket was on the outward facing side of the glass. As was explained by customer service, it is the outward facing part of the gasket that forms the airtight seal.

5. Replaced the 4 retaining plates and 8 screws, tightening gently up to the point where the metal screw went no further. Over tightening will only lead to cracked glass.


Can't wait to start burning and to see if the new glass gasket will remedy some annoying corner soot build up. The old gasket was badly frayed going into my third year of burning on the 13NC.
