Replacing my Propane Stove with a wood burner, need chimney help . . .

Howdy All,

We've been using a Vermont Casting (Dutch West series) propane stove for about 10 years. Like it, but really miss the smell and snap, crackle, pop of real wood. I want to drop in a small wood burner in the same spot (pics below hopefully) and utilize the same chimney. However, I need advice on (most likely) having to extend the chimney on the outside up to, and even with, the roof line.

Right now (see pics below) my vent is on the west wall, but under the soffit. It works fine with my current smokeless setup but with real smoke coming out of a new wood burner I suspect having the output under the soffit would cause issues. Correct? Thoughts?

You can put it in the same spot I am sure but you don't have any chimney to reuse. All you have is a direct vent setup you would be starting from scratch.

Thanks for the reply but can you expand on this? I am unable to use this same venting setup?

If not, what would l need to do to utilize a wood burner?

Absolutely not.

You will need a prefab chimney commonly called class a chimney

Is this something that I do myself, acquire the parts, or do I need to have someone do this?

Yes the whole system needs changed. If you are reasonably handy you could do it. But most modern stoves are going to need atleast 12' of chimney to work properly. That may be hard at that location
