I was recently given a 1980 "Defiant 1975" non cat stove and wondered if anyone on this forum sells repurposed parts? Looking for a baffle for the right side of the firebox. Thanks!

Thanks, I think in order to save money I'm going to fabricate a steel plate that I will bolt on over the existing baffle to protect it from further heat damage. That should give me a few more decades of use out of it.

Hi there, I just purchased from Woodman's. I picked up all the internal parts from them for my Defiant II. Cost was pretty reasonable, parts were in stock and shipped like they said.

I'm not a metalurgist, but the idea of bolting cast iron and cold rolled steel together might not work out too well, give differences in expansion and contraction. Cast iron can be welded, but it takes particular expertise - which is hard to come by these days. Unlike steel, a large portion of the cast iron workpiece must be heated up - and cooled - slowly so stress cracks don't develop afterwards. I mean just about anyone can lay down a bead with a MIG welder with a few minutes practice, but success with cast iron takes decades....

Cheers

Ok , this is a follow up from my last post. I fabricated an internal shield out of 1" pipe for the back side of the firebox. I did this because I am starting to see some minor hairline cracks in the back "1975" plate and wanted to slow the deterioration process. This also reduces the effective firebox size a bit, but in the case of the Defiant this is probably a good thing as it is a beast!

Next step was to mount a cast iron repair plate made from an old clawfoot tub onto the existing baffle which had the lower left corner broken off (see pic).

I put this all together today and test fired it with a good load of fraxinus for about 4 hours getting it up to full heatitude and it appears to function really well. Thoughts??
