I was very generous with my instal on my PE Super 27 Wood Stove. The Pipe is about 5 inches farther away from the unprotected wall than is specified. The wall still got pretty warm so instead of putting a heat shield on the wall, I bought some light weight gas flu pipe and spread it to make a "half pipe" shape and attached it to my stove pipe with strapping. The wall stays cool no matter how hot the stove is and its really not that noticable.
