Sad looking wood pile

Last December we scrounged some old white oak from the neighbor's place right across the road from us. It was really old; 10-12 years it had laid on the ground. Naturally there were different lengths and it was all big stuff. So we split it and yes, there was some punk but not a lot. Mostly the problem is they are almost all uglies and all different lengths. So, there is a bit over a cord of wood stacked here but it ain't pretty. Has to be the ugliest wood pile I've ever had....but it will still burn good.



In addition to the ugly pile, just for kicks I stacked it east to west rather than north to south. Figured it was different so I'd really goof off.

I've got to get a White that has been down, but off the ground, for at least seven years. That stuff is going to smell great when splitting it, I'm betting. Best thing is, it's about 100 yds. from where it will be stacked.

Time will tell on this one. It was really ugly stacking because very few pieces were straight. Big knots, short pieces, long pieces. If it stays, okay. If not, well we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I've done these before and they stayed up okay.

Surprised it looks that good! Here in the humid south all you would have left would be the very center of the heard wood. Everything else would be rooted away.

Ummmm still looks better than some of mine, but the ash all looks the same after it's done it's job. It'll never dry stacked the wrong direction Dennis. You do know that right? A C

I hand split everything so usually my nice stacks look somewhat like your ugly stacks.
I guess its the natural hand split look.

Why is it your ugly looks better than my pretty stacks? Since I've only been doing this for 9 months or so they ain't too bad. I guess it'll take a few dozen cord to get the hang of it.

Since most of the stuff I get is free all of my stacks are very similar. All mismatched but that's alright.

Stacking those uglies and shorties is a bit like playing Tetris and takes more patience than normal splits, doesn't it? The knots burn longer and white oak is good stuff. Even your stacks of blobby wood look great, Dennis.

I feel your pain, all of the wood I get from the tree service hook ups are like this. I couldn't find two pieces of equal length to save my life and most of it is a gnarly mess. As you say it will still burn, I sure hate stacking it!

And to think, this many posts and no comments about all those little short things on the ground at the end of the stack. Actually, there are some on both ends. I'll probably throw those in the stove this fall. I'll just take a trailer load at a time or maybe a couple barrels. They will make good short fires in the fall.
