I have recently bought an older Schrader fireplace/woodstove can anyone answer me did the older ones have any kind of flame deflector/shield in them?????

That stove will throw some heat without even trying. Bank I at night, barely crack the vents and you’ll still coals in the morning so you can bank it again. And, your house will be warm.
