Just down the street, I couldn't help myself. Leaf, bark, and color made me think it was silver maple. Now I'm wondering if it's a poplar???

Wonder if they cut 2 trees and the silver is gone. The leaf is silver maple I'm pretty sure...

The lead is definitely not poplar. Looks like maple to me. The bark on the both the big and small rounds also don't look right for poplar. I'm not familiar with silver maple. Not sure if we have that up here.

The rounds are tulip poplar and the leaf seems to be silver maple. Those other leaves on the ground seem all over the place, sugar maple and something that looks like southern red oak..... Isn't wood scrounging/identification fun, I would love to take an dendrology class myself....

Gah!.....oh well. Poplar it is!!!
 
Silver Maple wood is really white through and through. Poplar has that dark center and Maple bark is a bit more flaky.

If u look closely at pic #1 there are definitely tulip poplar leaves on the pile. Tulip poplar is actually one of the harder poplars. I think u will be happy with it. Oak it is not, but there are worse woods u could have found. NICE scrounge tho!
 
Free, just down the street, nice size rounds, ready to roll onto your trailer. Poplar or not I would have grabbed it up too. A bit of maple would have been a bonus but regardless, it's a good scrounge IMHO....
 
Thanks fellas! My first year....heck, my stove isn't even in yet! Made a good connection with a guy with 3 year old oak. 120 for a generous long bed load. That'll get me through my 1st year. I'll keep scrounging for 2016-17. Luckily our winters are mellow. I may go grab some more!!! Watch yer fingers.
 
I have no idea what the wood is but if that's your shoe in the leaf picture you better give back your man card.......!

Yep. That's poplar. Well, it burns. I wouldn't go across the street for it myself, because better woods are plentiful here, but... it burns. I'm getting some this weekend because I'm helping a friend drop some trees that are problems for him, and I'm getting the wood. One or two of them are poplar, so I'll haul it along with the oak.

Otherwise, meh.

Poplar or not, it's free, close, and will throw some heat. Use it for the shoulder season. Save the harder woods for the colder weather. Anything burns better than a snowball.....

No worries....you'll find if you yank my chain, I'll yank right back. After I got lucky enough to be a mom to that kid to your left I remembered all the stuff I dreamed about when I was a little girl Being a kid of the 70's I grew up on National Geographic, Grizzly Adams, yada yada. Last year I finally got out to deer hunt and harvested 3 deer. It was amusing youtube-ing in the woods "how to clean a deer"....but hey, my freezer got filled. So the wood stove was the next thing.....I want to live off the grid but that's hard to do in a metro area as I live 7 miles from downtown Atlanta. I'm right smack in the middle of ghettoburbia where my neighbors are routinely robbed. The fact that I split wood and butcher deer in my front yard keeps my house on their "do not f%&* with" list.

I'm not your average chick.....I appreciate all your words of humor, encouragement, and finger wagging. Seriously....I'm having a blast!!!!!

You have a very outspoken little one in the avatar ... wonder if anyone has really taken a close look;lol Good luck on the scrounge and glad to hear about the steel toes!

Tulip poplar isn't even a true poplar, it's in the magnolia family. Look for some pictures of the flowers, they even look like magnolias! They are very pretty trees. One of the fastest growing and tallest hardwoods in the South - one of my favorites.

In the first picture, tulip tree leaves are very clearly visible.
