So...am I the only one that seems to be invaded with wasps?!

Hey guys

It's been a while..I hope everyone is well.

Ok. So we have had 2 days of real heat. And BOOM. There's a wasp infestation in my town. Everyone is saying how they have never seen to many. For example, my basement entrance outside door is not AIR tight. Well, I look from my basement door upward and counted 25 in the window! They are all around the house, the garage, everywhere. I just came from my tent trailer (which is setup) and killed 8. A queen had started a nest inside the camper.

Having spoken to friends, it's not just my house. Everywhere in my town seems to be affected.

What about your towns or your part of the world?!

Here in our slice of Sask., there's been little to no wasps or hornets at all. I saw a few early on in the season, but very minimal. Last year was bad in the yard though! Caught them building a nest in the wood shed, but it got the permethrin treatment and they died. Of course they build a nest about 60 feet away in the trees and harassed us all year. I only found the old nest a few weeks ago.

I get a few small nests that start every year under the roof peaks at the soffit. No big deal knock em down wash em off and do it again next year. I do get some mud wasps on my stone mortar outside, same deal wash em off and move on

Kind of a funny story, my mother in law got us one of those "eye spy birdhouses" with the clear back you put in your window and you can creepily peak at the birds in their house. Well it's been stuck on our window for about 4 years and not one bird. This year and wasp decided to make it home. Started out like any other wasp nest with a few hexes then she kept making more. That was probably 1-2 months ago when it started. Now there's the queen and 4-5 workers in there at all times. The nest had grown substantially since the workers have hatched. I'm going to let the nest go until I decide its out of control or this winter when they move on.

If the nest grows beyond control I'll move it to another location. Plan of attack on relocation: wait until night, since wasps aren't active at night, and plug the birdhouse opening. Then I'll remove it from the window and take it out to the hedge row at work, which is well away from anyone, and attach it to a tree. Once attached to the tree remove plug and hope nobody inside is pissed off.

Kind of reminds me of the story of the people who sold their house but brought their mailbox with them because they didn't want to change their address.

On east coast US and have carpenter bees, ground wasps, and hornets. Not an overabundance, but they are all on/near my house already

See, this year was just odd. I had seen a few hundred in the run of 2 days. And then poof..they were all gone. Very similar to the flying ants. Everyone was talking about them for the 2 days they were around. We always have a few looking to make a home every spring. But this was nearly an infestation. A TON of them were all over the place. It lasted 2 days. Weird.

Not sure if they were introduced to take care of any other pest or bug but it didn't seem naturally occurring to me.
