Some Stove Advice Just Makes Ya Cringe...

From a national chain's website review comment section for people that purchased a 30-NC.

"Yes this is a difficult stove to fire up (arrn't they all?) but guys, for gods sake, that darn thing ships with a blower.. use it! Buy some 4" flex pipe at the store and connect to the air intake then use some 6" to connect blower to tube add kindling and well placed log or two SHUT THE DOOR, switch on and come back in 30 mins to hot coals, Sheesh.

Once fired up, this thing rocks and the air intake is size correctly. It is not big enough for cold starts. It would need to be 3x the size and then joe public would overfire the thang and complain about that. Once running this stove is well tuned and works well."

Sooooo, how many of you were there at the shop, late at night,,,,, all sorts of tanked up, when someone decided to take that call that came in after hours and give an explanation so outlandish that there is no way they would try it...... doh!

haha, just kidding of course. But, I often wonder what the worst thing is that anyone has done to one of these stoves,,, and had it survive unscathed!?! or at least still reasonably operable.

i have seen some things that would make your skin crawl.

heck on youtube you can watch a fool with his gee whiz veggie oil injected corn stove , guy actually built a manifold and put a pump in to inject veggie oil into his fire while burning, thats not the worst part, he has the veggie oil sitting on top of the stove in a coffee can, but its still not liquified enough for the pump so he submerges a light bulb into the veggie oil to make it light enough for the pump....

I checked the ACE site today to see if they were selling the stoves. I do that every couple of years. Back in 2006 I went to the ACE store two miles from my house and asked if they could get me a 30. The guy looked confused but got on the computer and said that he could. Gave me a price and it was list but that was fine. He said ACE had to get in touch with ESW to get a shipping cost. I said fine, call me. I needed a stove since it was October and I had just discovered my old stove was busted. Two days later with no call I went back. He denied he had ever even talked to me.

I got online and found one and had it shipped to me. Which is what led to an email from ESW tech support when I registered it on their website. "My boss just noticed that you live in Northern Virginia and you purchased this stove in Boulder Colorado?"

I wonder who that boss was that asked the question? The freight truck actually passed within a few miles of the ESW plant, 143 miles South of my house, headed to the Richmond terminal and then North to the terminal here. It made an 1,100 mile trip to my house.

ACE is the place with the helpful hardware idiot.

After its trip from Monroe to Boulder and all the way back to my house it arrived as a factory defect. Mike was gonna ship me a new one but I decided to load it up and go down to Monroe to swap it and got to meet Mike and also Bob Pennington who designed the stove. In the burn lab. Neat setup. Easily the longest story of a 30-NC purchase in history. And I caught grief for two years for being the first one one on hearth.com for buying one. Not a PE or other cuties. And paid more for it than anybody on here has since then.

But do a search on the sucker now. They are owned and loved by a lot of folks here. Ain't a case of the pioneer having arrows in his chest on that one anymore.

BB, I'll stand right beside you on that recomendation. When I threw it out there that a second stove was in order, you touted the 13. I never looked back.

But never said you should buy one. I have been given grief for recommending somebody buy one of their stoves forever but have only done it one time here. In fact one guy that said I was pimping their stoves was publicly offered a hundred bucks for every post he could find where I said to buy one. My wallet never got hit.

I just do tee-shirts after the fact.
