Next door neighbor had a giant tree cut down in her front yard today... on my way to work I asked the tree guys to save some for me. Came home to this pile in the driveway.

What do I have here, maple of some sort?

Seems to be wet? I would agree on some sort of maple

Red maple. Looks like they made a truckload of noodles in the process.

Nice score
Maple, delivered, free! =
Spoiled :)

Get it split rather soon.
That wet it'll start to go punky in no time unless it's split ;)

Bark doesn't look quite right to me for Red...I'll guess Sugar.

Woody has it. Hard Maple for sure.

Nice stacks you have out back. That sugar maple will be a nice addition to them.

So definitely some kind of maple I guess. Tree was 36"+ across at the base which I think accounts for all the noodles. They were kind enough to cut it short too as my stove only takes a 16" log N/S. There will be some beer and cookies for those guys later today.

Here's a better pic of the grain:

This stuff is fairly heavy so thinking it might be hard maple?

Yeah...thats what the Ford guy said. Hard/sugar maple. Its good you stopped and asked. You have premium firewood there.
You also have the same exact pickup truck as me!! Great taste in trucks too!!
Peanut butter cookies go well with beer. Bake ALOT of them, thats heavy wood!!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I'd put it in the next rank below "premium." Medium-high output, on par with Red Oak at about 24 M BTU/cord. "Primo" starts at White Oak in my book, 25.7. ==c But yeah, great wood and I'll grab it any time.
Agreed, fresh it has got some serious heft to it. <>

Jeff, you are getting some great firewood. You'll love that maple too.
