I've never split wood in the cold until today. I had some green windfall Douglas Fir rounds in the way of a wood row, have heard many times that splitting is easier frozen but have never been at that stage of wood during the cold (probably since this is the first year with a UTV)
Today is -10°c (32-(10×1.8) °f) I didn't had a chance to split this tree not frozen, but I have never been able to split green Douglas Fir like this. I was able to split from the outside in knocking perimeter pieces off first, making much nicer square splits near the center. (like the youtube sensation Buckin Billy Ray) I have not been able to do that before, maybe haven't tried hard enough? I was able to split much faster with much less strategy revolving around the grain of the wood or branch placement.
I've been doing wood for 30ish years, 17 in my own owned houses and this is a bit of a revelation. I wonder how I would I get all the rounds during the summer to be able to split in the cold.
There's a bunch of green windfall up the hill calling my name.

Does frozen partially dry wood split similarly?
