Spliter problem

went to start my hydraulic splitter this morning, which is a 25 ton dirty handtools model. Pull the chain to start it after doing all the normal stuff and the chain just pulls freely with no resistance in which to start the motor. I’m guessing this is some thing that happens fairly routinely, but I haven’t dealt with it yet. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks in advance!

The recoil starter has pawls that engage with the engine flywheel. If they are broken or stuck then nothing will happen when you pull the starter cord. Remove the starter assembly and see what's wrong with it.

I even have a Honda engine that does this sometimes....often just pulling the rope with a real fast short stroke right off the bat will get the dogs to pop out/start working.

Thank you all for the replies. I did the yank the cord short and fast thing I’m and it worked!
