I moved out of my cape with gas heat and a regency insert set up in center of the house chimney. I now have 2 open masonary fireplaces on exterior wall and oil heat. Long story why I didn't take insert. The oil heat is cheap enough this year and heating season is almost over. I need to get a jump on next year and rebuild my firewood supply. I have never burned in an exterior wall fireplace. Will a standard flex liner improve my draft? If I only do one insert should it be up or down stairs? It is a split level home in the middle of the woods. I own about an acre with plenty of elbow room on all sides.

Well you will need a liner of some sort flex will be the easiest I recommend heavy flex over the light wall but light will work ok. What ever you do insulate the liner the firebox and do a block off plate.
