storing chain saws

I recently upgraded my house but downgraded my barn, so I'm looking for ways to economize on space. the new garage was actually built with 2x6s, so there's a lot of space there I'm looking to use.

I always just stored chainsaws empty but upright on a table, because I could. If I were to store them vertically (hanging from the handle, or by the blade) is there a problem or preference? Seems like someone out there must have tried this and had some experience.

Two pegs or a narrow shelf on the wall, and you can store the horizontal. I've seen others hang them from the top handle, with a bicycle hook in a ceiling joist.

I've got limited space in my shop. I hang mine from the rest handle from a bicycle hook so the bar points to the floor. Never had an issue. Also the manual doesn't say what position to store the saw in. So whatever you come up with would probably be fine.

About the only thing I'd factor in is what is below where some bar oil might drip. Storing it the way I do I don't have any bar oil drippage.

I think it probably depends on the saw, too. I wouldn't hang my 610 like that because of how the weird vibe system is and it would stretch it all out because it's a fairly heavy saw and bar combo. I'd have no problem doing that to my anchor weighted old super 250 or my 16" barred Stihl MS250. I store mine diagonally on a shelf, but I have the space to do that.

Mine goes in one of the orange Husky carrying cases. It's rectangle shaped and is very compatible for stacking in storage.

I keep smaller saws in cases and larger ones on shelves on those plastic boot trays that start to appear this time of year in big box stores.

Can't comment on the recommended orientation. But with my basement full of stuff, I have built all types of rafter racks for just about everything. Kayak's, dozens of ski's, boat equipment, etc. All high enough you can walk under them and you don't know it's up there.

I haven't put my only saw up there, but it does take a lot of floor space, it needs to get up there. To contain the bar oil mine is in a full case.

I just set mine on a wooden shelf. The wood soaks up any leaking bar oil, such that it is now quite impervious to water, and I don't mind setting a saw that was previously sitting in the snow right on the shelf.
