hey guys , not to worry when reading the title . . .
ive been burning fine for 3 seasons with the baker insert i have . 15 cords later and were still in love
if you dont know , its an older coal/wood burning insert, and almost 600lbs ( http://www.bakerstoves.com/stoves5.htm )
anyways , i bak the stove at night to get that great 8 hours overnight burn , and do so by cramming in about 5 splits of red oak .
usually i just open the bottom ash door knobs all the way , and open the loading door knobs all the way too .. then relax for about 30 minutes till it gets up to about 700 and im good to go .
i then close the bottom ash door knobs all the way , and slowly decrease over a few minutes the top knobs to 1/2-1 turn form closed to choke it down and then its bed time!
well , a couple times when i was in a rush i cracked the ash door open(not just the knobs) to rush in some crazy air to kick the fire up real quick . i only need to do this for 15 minutes for the logs to get up to speed as compared to with the door closed.
i hate doing this though , cus im wasting heat too .
well i couple times when the stove is blazing at 600-700 and i close the ash door and shut the lower knobs i will all of a sudden notice theres really no roaring of the fire instantly and then immediately followed by this low rumble and vibration like a herd of buffalo are coming down the chimney . the first time it happened it shook the loading door window and a small poof of smoke came out of the knobs on the loading door.
i then preceed to crap my pants and hurry up and open the draft knobs at the bottom . and ALL IS WELL .... 10 seconds later i can proceed to slowly close the knobs to all the way shut.
again , this is easily avoided by not choking the fire of almost all its air supply when its roaring . i dont ever open the ash door to blaze the fire up unless its a new fire and a cold stove.
i also have a 7" stainless liner that goes from the top of the insert all the way up . my draft is fantastic, and im thinking what happens is its roaring away with great draft and then like a vacuum , all those flue gas reverse ... like the movie!!
anyways , just wanted to know if anyone else has had something like this happen .
pretty interesting though
