Suggestions for a wood stove

Hi all,

I've been reading and learning on this thread--thanks to all.

My boyfriend and I are building a small log cabin, 600 sq ft, and need a wood stove. It will be our only heat source; we have good insulation--brand new spray insulation and chinking. We built a soapstone stone pad & veneered the wall (about 30" high) in the main room for the stove.

We're looking for a stove that will last most of the night but not run us out of the house, since Virginia winters aren't too bad. (Does such a stove exist?

Any suggestions?

We've been looking at Englander13, and Hearthstone Tribute, but not sure it's worth the extra money.

20 series from Blaze king. Sirocco, chinook, or the new ashford.

Anything else either wont get the burn time or will cook you out of that small of area. My sirocco keeps my 750sqft basement warm on the coldest days but can still be run when its only 45F out.

It's going to be hard to prevent overheating, especially when temps are in the 45-65 range. I would look at a Woodstock Keystone or Fireview in soapstone. Or maybe a BlazeKing Sirocco or Ashford 20 or a Vermont Castings Intrepid II? And I would have an electric baseboard heater or a couple oil-filled electric heaters for milder weather.

Neighbors down the road have been heating their small place with a Jotul F602CB for a few years now. They say they still like it. Not sure if they are heating in milder weather with it though. I don't think so, I don't see smoke or heat waves coming from their chimney yet. With a stove this small expect to get up at 4-5am for a reload in cold weather. The burn time will be on the shorter side. That's why my first suggestions were all catalytic stoves.

Yea I get 9+ hours of heat out of my small fire box.

What part of Virginia? Will this be your residence or a weekend get away?

I'm thinking perhaps a wood stove and an alternate heat source.

Is there power, natural gas?

The NC13 will cook you out

The Hearthstone is small and will not burn "all night," but in a well insulated space your cabin should still be plenty warm

The 13-NC Englander would do the job just like the lil Jotul. Just 1.8 cf firebox but just like bigger stoves you can build smaller hot fires in it and it is heavy enough to generate heat in the 250 degree range for a good while after the wood burns down to coals.

My bad. It's absolutely best practice to buy a stove based on a once every 10 year winter storm.

Yelp, that's why I asked what part of Virginia.

We had a similar size cabin we used as a hunting camp. With just chinking we kept if comfortable in milder weather with two Coleman lanterns. Then used a 2.6? cf wood stove when it was cold. Stove was always shut down and smoldering.

I'm not recommending Coleman lanterns indoors or a smoldering fire for that matter. Just my experience with similar heating needs.

I agree with those. Sounds to me like your install screams a catalytic stove, they run well cut WAY back.

Maybe a buck model 20 would be another possibility.

A non cat stove that you could probably run would be a jotul f 602 or GF 200. These are not cat stoves, but they are small stoves.

I am still a big fan of a stove that is too big and building a small fire in it.

You could also consider some of the smaller stoves from Osburn (900 or 1100). There are several on here that use their stoves (the 2400 insert is very popular).

Yep, I listed several. When it gets cold enough outside the stove will be welcome. In milder weather plug in a heater.

I had never heard of Blaze King or Jotul, sounds like exactly what we need.

We live there full time. Central Virginia, so it does get cold and last winter was colder than usual, but nothing like New England. : )

We'll probably get an electric heater for the upstairs in mild weather.
