I sure understand that. I'd have to check with my fireplace man before I used. He told me NOT to burn the colored,shinny newspaper ad paper. I think he said it gums up the converter - makes more need for him. LOL

Jags, I read your marker "Sarcasm..." so thought you may appreciate it too. I'm going to try the pucks, if fireplace cleaner man agrees. This Extrodinare has worked wonderful for many years - don't want to chance screwin' that up. LOL
Finally tried mine, quartered one with my wife's kitchen knife sharpener turned on its side. Just as I expected. Awesome.
I may not use them for every fire(doubt it) but they're going to be great for those 4am wakeups to a cold house!

I don't understand what My Sharona has to do with this? Super Cedars just make life cleaner, easier and more fun.
Opps - Don't understand My Sharona. I'm sure you're right, but not sure where "fun" comes in to equation. Kinda think the challenge of building that perfect fire, is fun. I know Different strokes ... LOL
Those super cedars will probably be easier on the "system" than flyash from newspapers. Just sayin'.

Jags & Dairyman, Thanks - hadn't thought of those factors. I'm a die-hard firebug, but not unwilling to try something new. Hey, I've been known to get a huge bon fire going with 1 paper napkin - It's the challenge. LOL

Jags, I already did that - see I'm not stubborn. LOL Not much doubt I'll be buyin' -- I have kids who think it's necessary to start a bon fire with gasoline.( Bad News) so they NEED stocking stuffers. I will try a puck or 2, IF fireplace man agrees. He installed and services it. Can't take a change of screwin' something up. Now it's time to ready to go quad riding. Wha Whooo
There is a copy of the report of an independent lab on the Super Cedars site where they were tested with cat combustors with great results and no damage to the cat.
BroBart, I saw that after I connected with Thomas, who explained that Western Cedar doesn't have pitch - which is the culpret item. Just doing my due diligence.

I find 'self clipping and cleaning in areas on this acerage that don't need to be cleaned, just so I can start a fire. It's not only watching it burn - there's a challenge to starting with minimal paper. i.e. a single napkin. Yeah, a little crazy
Yeah I've tried my fair share of "firestarter" products and I guess there's something about the western cedar--when it burns, it produces a flame just like other firestarters but there's .... something "hotter" about it I guess. Looks damned near the same as any other firestarter to my untrained eyes, but the wood ignites way more reliably.
I like that it only takes 1/4 of a puck to get the fire going. I take one out of the wrapper, throw it in a ziplock bag, and break it into 1/4s with my hands. No mess, no crumbs, and the other pieces are neatly stored until I need them.

Jean, you keep repeating about the challenge of starting a fire. What challenge? If you have good fuel it is no challenge at all. If you are burning poor fuel, you will have more challenge than you bargain for.
As for the super cedars and the stove, we have a cat stove and there is no problem. Not sure why you'd have to check with a fireplace cleaner man.... As Jags stated, fly ash and crap from newspapers will do more harm than a super cedar. And since most newspapers have colored paper now I really hate using them in a stove.

I like the challenge of the classic "1 match fire" - although the rules of the game we always stayed with was nothing man made other than the single match. No paper etc. However, when it comes to starting the stove, efficiency is the name of the game 5/7th of the week. Granted, during the coldest part of the winter we just reload, but during the shoulder season when we're burning every other day or less, I need to be able to build/light/walk away in 5 minutes or less. No time for fancy stacking of the kindling and tinder in the stove - no tying paper knots to excite the Canadian clean-burning-top-down advocates.
Put wood in stove, drop a piece of the SC between the cracks after lighting a corner, shut the stove door and walk away with air fully open. Come back in 10 minutes (visit the john/start coffee) to adjust air down a bit, then wait another 10-20 minutes (morning empty of dishwasher, start kids snacks/lunches) before engaging cat and final air adjustment before forgetting the stove until next reload (may be 30 minutes on a slow day).
The point here is that as fun as it may be to start fires, much of the time it is just a part of the routine here - and I suspect that is true for a lot of folks. I get a very consistent startup with the SC product - I used to do fancy top-down with lots of kindling. Took considerably longer to get loaded into the stove (you can search threads for the pictures I posted of one such load) and it wasn't much better in the end. Plus I had to have all that kindling gathered and stored.. more time and trouble. For me the 15-20c per start is worth during the shoulder season.
