termovar challenge

My boiler was idleing with my storage tank temps in the low 130*. It got progressively worse to the point where I couldn't transfer any heat at all to the tank. I removed the thermostatic valve and fired the boiler and it ran like a champ. I ordered a new valve and installed it tonight and the same thing happened. I am going to boil test the new valve (what are the chances of getting a valve that does the same thing!). Like I said, guts removed and the tank temps start to climb immediately. The t stat valve was possitioned at port 2. Ports 1 and 2 were un blocked with the exception of the mixing valve.

Any thoughts?

Was this valve operating correctly before, or is this in a new install?

I installed the boiler almost 5 years ago. It has been relatively trouble free. This is a recent development with this valve.

My termovar has blocking valves at each port. Are you sure there is no blockage at the isolation valve? Not sure if you removed these or not in your explanation.

No blockage at isolation valves. When I remove the guts of the valve, the boiler operates flawlessly.

Did you boil test yet?

My first thought was your pump wasn't running. That would prevent the thermostat from seeing the hoter water that would make it open. With the thermostat removed, gravity flow might be allowed making it appear that things were OK. So are you sure the pump is running? Do you have more than one pump?

That's all said without knowing anything else about your setup though.

I have had that happen with an air lock at my loading unit pump. A few taps on the side got the water moving.

I can feel a slight vibration when I touch the pump on the primary loop. Also, the temps climbed pretty quickly last night once I removed the "guts" of the valve. Do you have more than one pump? I do. A 007 on the primary and a 014 on the secondary loop.

That's all said without knowing anything else about your setup though.
